B-Side Multimedia Festival 2010 Commissions - ARTIST BRIEF
B-Side is a biennial multimedia, site-specific arts festival, animating
public spaces in Weymouth and
Portland. Inspired by the Oflip¹ side of vinyl recordings, B-Side offers
opportunities for artists and audiences
to explore the less commercial aspects of South West coastal resorts.
B-Side is offering a number of commissions to create new site based
work to
be showcased, alongside
other events and activities, as part of a programme for this years
festival
17-26 September 2010. Proposals
are invited from emerging and established artists working in visual art,
moving image performance/live art
and sound. We are looking for really exciting ideas which are achievable
within a budget of £500 - £5000.
Guidance for artists:
Commissions will be developed in response to sites along two routes in
Weymouth and Portland creating a
number of interventions in which the public can engage.
The two proposed routes are:
Portland - Through Chiswell at the eastern end of Chesil Beach and
Fortuneswell - the high street, Oopes¹
and alleyways that surround and lead off from Chiswell to the top of the
island.
Weymouth - Along and in proximity to the Promenade, from the end of
the pier
near the ferry terminal to the
Oasis Café at Bowleaze.
Proposals can be specific to sites along these routes or indicate a
preferred type of location to be
determined and allocated at a later stage (sites will be negotiated and
secured by the Festival Producer).
Proposals can be for work made for intimate spaces as well as larger
public
spaces, they can also be
mobile or incorporate and respond to a route or journey. Artworks
should be
site specific/sensitive/
responsive and non permanent, exploring the fabric, history or
contemporary
use of the space/place and
aim to invite audiences to engage and respond. We are encouraging
interventions to have a presence
throughout the festival period (17 - 26 September 2010) however the
focus
could be for a particular
date/time/event during that time frame.
Key words: innovate, animate, regenerate, celebrate, transience,
absence,
presence, past, present, future.
