personal attention from faculty, and are encouraged to work on
interdisciplinary projects. We seek students with a strong foundation
who wish to develop creative work integrating a wide range of
contemporary music and ideas.
The MFA program is generally completed in two years. Many students
receive tuition waivers and stipends in return for working as teaching
assistants. Applicants should possess an undergraduate degree in music
or an equivalent level of training, and should demonstrate potential
for creative and innovative work. For more details on the program and

From: Douglas E. Geers
I strongly encourage any students interested in electroacoustic music
composition to apply to join us in 2010-2011. Brooklyn College has
both undergraduate and master’s degrees in music composition, a
master’s program in Performance and Interactive Media Arts (PIMA), as
well as a music technology program. BC’s undergraduate program
features a strong liberal arts core, quite similar to that of “ivy
league” institutions. Ph.D. study is also possible, through
application to the CUNY Graduate Center.
Our faculty also includes acclaimed pianist and Distiguished Professor
Ursula Oppens, who directs a student new music ensemble, ConTempo, a
group that plays not only well-known contemporary works but each
semester premieres newly-composed works by our student composers. We
also have annual student residencies with our orchestra, wind
ensemble, percussion ensemble, and choir, as well as student
participation in the International Electroacoustic Music Festival and
annual CD produced by the Center for Computer Music.

Ear to the Earth: Call for Works
Ear to the Earth is an annual festival and worldwide network based on
the idea that environmental sound can connect us to the environment
with a special vibrancy and emotional depth. The theme of next year's
Ear to the Earth festival, to take place in October 2010, will be water.
Although the festival will be focused at different venues in New York
City, it will have an international scope. We would like to
demonstrate that artists around the world are concerned about the
environment.
We're interested in the sounds of water and/or sounds or performances
that will make us aware of water. We want to direct the public's
attention to environmental problems relating to water, including, as a
few examples, drinkable water, melting ice, rising sea levels, and
polluted rivers.
The festival will incude documentary field recordings, instrumental
and electronic compositions, performances, installations, interactive
websites, and any other forms of experimental audio with imagery and
multimedia. To create a clear context for the festival, we are also
planning to invite scientists and artists to participate in panels and
forums on different aspects of water-related issues.

the world during October 2010, and if you would like us to include it
as a festival event, let us know.

Animation Studio: Call for proposals
Animation Studio, Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (Eindhoven
University of Technology) and STRP Festival invite artists, designers
and scientists to submit proposals for developing a new visual
language for science. Recently, a new problem has emerged for
molecular scientists. For many decennia they have used a world-wide
accepted way of representing molecules, even though these molecules
have never really been seen. Unfortunately, this language is not
suitable to represent the increasing complexity of the molecular
systems and dynamic processes that are subject of modern research. The
Animation Studio of the ICMS has set itself the goal to make large
contributions in the development of a new visual language. We think
that a breakthrough in this area is only possible with ideas of people
with different specialisms and, therefore, we want to unite people
from all kind of backgrounds.
We are looking for input as a starting point for the development of a
new visual language for molecular scientists. In the first step,
marked by this call for proposals, we invite you to submit your
proposals for ideas, examples, directions, artworks and experiments.
We will make a selection out of the submitted proposals and invite the
applicants to further develop their proposal. In a second stage, we
will make a translation of these elaborated ideas into a more
molecular application or, depending on the status of the project, use
them to create molecular animations.
You can submit your work via email or regular mail. Please include
your full contact details with the application as well as some
examples of earlier work.

UCM New Music Festival: Call for Papers
This year marks the second annual new music festival at the University
of Central Missouri. In keeping with this anniversary, we have
organized the festival around the theme of "dualities."
Many binary issues are well-researched in musicological study, from
bipartite form to the bit-by-bit nature of digital audio, but the
concept of "two-ness" still gives rise to a number of fruitful lines
of inquiry. Various dichotomies (e.g. new/old, good/bad, complex/
simple) present paths into understandings of music, as well as
providing the bases for any number of compositions. Relationships
between composers, performers, and audiences are also deeply shaped by
dualities. The tensions arising from the self/other dichotomy are
inherent in any collaborative team and in some cases can form the
foundation for the team's success. Papers on any topic relating to
music since 1945 are welcome, but we particularly invite scholars to
consider issues relating to dualities in music.
Proposals should include an abstract (ca. 500 words) addressing the
general subject, originality, methodology, and conclusions, and may
also include supporting documentation as needed. Please specify any
audio-visual equipment needed for the session. The maximum time limit
for individual papers will be 20 minutes; paper presentations will be
limited to 30 minutes total, including time for questions.

Subtle Technologies: Call for Papers
For this year’s Subtle Technologies Festival, we wish to explore
sustainability through a critical multidisciplinary lens. We invite
investigations of the role that decentralization, diversity and
societal power dynamics plays in our attempts at maintaining a
sustainable future. Where does the death of languages, cultures and
peoples fit into the sustainability discussion? We look forward to
critical discussions that explore multiple meanings of sustainability
in this state of ecological and global health. We will be discussing
the science and technology behind sustainable practices and design as
well as the science behind some of the events and circumstances that
have driven us to seek sustainable solutions. What role does the
artist play in bringing forth new layers of understandings in this
discussion?
Specifically, this year we are looking for proposals for presentations
for our symposium (presentations are from 30 to 45 minutes long) ,
works for our exhibitions, video and film submissions for screenings,
workshops and partners for collaborations. Some example areas of
exploration in sustainability include: political and historical
perspectives, design and architectural practices, global warming,
climate change refugees, agriculture, water and other resource
management, cultural preservation, material science, alternative
energy systems, corporate responsibility, co-operatives and
microfinance, biodiversity conservation, preservation of indigenous
knowledge, and the culture of consumption.

Wright State Department of Music, March 13-14, 2010
Colloquium #1: Ben Johnston and the American Just Microtonal Tradition
Colloquium #2: Tuning Practices since 1750, in Honor of Owen Jorgensen
The colloquium on Ben Johnston and the American Just Microtonal
Tradition seeks a wide range of approaches to the music of Ben
Johnston and composers closely associated with him. Analyses of
specific works, broader discussions of Johnston's career and output,
papers focusing on issues of performance practice, and historical/
philosophical discussions of the American just microtonal tradition
are all welcome areas of focus.
A second colloquium, Tuning Practices since 1750 will be held in honor
of Owen Jorgensen. Questions concerning tuning practices before 1750
have been carefully explored over the last generation of scholarship,
but tuning practices between about 1750 and the advent of recordings
have received little serious scholarly attention. This gap is all the
more puzzling, in that the core repertory of the Classical concert
tradition was created in this period. Owen Jorgensen's two major works
on historical piano tunings are core contributions to research into
tuning practices prior to 1900, but after some two decades his
research has still not been adequately discussed in the academic
literature.

Organised Sound: Call for papers
Denis Smalley: his influence on the theory and practice of
electroacoustic music
Denis Smalley is one of Britain’s foremost exponents of acousmatic
music, and a voice of international influence in both music and words.
In marking his 65th year (2011), this issue aims to re-evaluate and
extend the ideas and issues raised Denis Smalley’s music and writings,
to develop their connections with the work of others, and the UK. It
will focus especially, but not exclusively, on theoretical writings
such as ‘Spectromorphology and Structuring Processes’ (1986),
‘Defining Timbre – Refining Timbre’ (1994), ‘Space-Form and the
Acousmatic Image’ (2007), and on the influence of Smalley’s musical
output. New analyses will be welcomed, especially those which seek to
apply or evaluate Smalley’s theoretical ideas through analysis of his
music or that of other composers or the development of future
analytical tools. Naturally, there will be a focus on acousmatic
music, although music with live instruments will not be excluded since
it also features in Smalley’s output.

Deadline: December 4, 2009

Subtle Technologies: Call for Papers
For this year’s Subtle Technologies Festival, we wish to explore
sustainability through a critical multidisciplinary lens. We invite
investigations of the role that decentralization, diversity and
societal power dynamics plays in our attempts at maintaining a
sustainable future. Where does the death of languages, cultures and
peoples fit into the sustainability discussion? We look forward to
critical discussions that explore multiple meanings of sustainability
in this state of ecological and global health. We will be discussing
the science and technology behind sustainable practices and design as
well as the science behind some of the events and circumstances that
have driven us to seek sustainable solutions. What role does the
artist play in bringing forth new layers of understandings in this
discussion?
Specifically, this year we are looking for proposals for presentations
for our symposium (presentations are from 30 to 45 minutes long) ,
works for our exhibitions, video and film submissions for screenings,
workshops and partners for collaborations. Some example areas of
exploration in sustainability include: political and historical
perspectives, design and architectural practices, global warming,
climate change refugees, agriculture, water and other resource
management, cultural preservation, material science, alternative
energy systems, corporate responsibility, co-operatives and
microfinance, biodiversity conservation, preservation of indigenous
knowledge, and the culture of consumption.

American Innovators Series: Call for Papers
