On behalf of the International Music Institute Darmstadt, Search
Journal would like to announce a call for applications for a new
program during the Darmstadt Summer Courses this year. This Writing
Workshop is designed for young authors in musicology and music
journalism who focus on contemporary music. The official inclusion of
young musicologist and music journalists to the community of young
composers and interpreters is a very exciting development. We at
Search hope that this will further encourage thoughtful discussion and
writing about contemporary music in the international community in
general. Please pass the word on to young musicologists and music
journalists that might gain from such an opportunity. For further
information, please see below or in the pdf attachment. Thank you.

Writing Workshop
within the
45th International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt 2010
17 July to 31 July 2010
The International Summer Course for New Music Darmstadt launches in
2010 a project for the time that is addressed primarily to young authors
in musicology and music journalism. People who are interested should
focus on cotemporary music and the writing about this music. âEditors-
inchiefâ
are Stefan Fricke (Hessischer Rundfunk), Frank Hilberg
(Westdeutscher Rundfunk), Björn Gottstein (free lance author, Berlin),
and Richard Toop (Sydney University â bilingual teacher). The workshop
languages are german and english. In addition to the editors we will
welcome different representatives from (mainly) german newspapers,
radio stations and journals.
The International Summer Course for New Music seems to be an ideal
location to bring musicians (composers as well as performers),
musicologists and music journalists together. Two weeks â and more or
less round the clock â are a sufficient space of time for the
different
areas, both their respective potentials and individual jurisdictions, to
communicate with one another. These encounters can produce
numerous journalistic results in the most varied formats, because the
Writing Workshop projected here does not content itself with theoretical
discourse, but primarily seeks to offer instructions for practical work.
These serve the purpose of training, but also the formation of internal
archives. The possibilities for using the experimental field of the
Summer
Course as a practically oriented âemergency situationâ are as
manifold
as the formats themselves, and can extend from daily editorial
conferences via the production of radio and Internet broadcasts to a
special course magazine. An own Writing Workshop Blog will
communicate the results of the daily work.
