Hello all,
The second annual UCM New Music Festival will be held April 10-11,
2010 at the University of Central Missouri. All composers may submit
scores for consideration. Papers and panel sessions on topics related
to music since 1945 will be accepted for presentation at the
conference. Submissions from composers who can supply their own
performers are encouraged. Electronic, electroacoustic, acousmatic,
and multimedia works are also strongly encouraged (maximum 8.1 format
+ optional video; see website for list of available technology).
Deadline: Scores and recordings must be postmarked no later than Dec.
4, 2009.  Paper submissions should be emailed by that date.

Call for Scores:
This year, the UCM New Music Festival is pleased to welcome the Fire
Wire Ensemble as our featured guests. The Fire Wire Ensemble
specializes in music incorporating acoustic instruments, live
electronics, and improvisation. As part of this year's call for
scores, we will accept proposals for works to be performed by the Fire
Wire Ensemble.

The ensemble's available instrumentation is:

Clarinet (one performer: Bb or A clarinet)
Saxophone (one performer: soprano, alto, tenor, baritone,or bass)
Percussion (one performer: see list of available percussion on the
festival website)
Live electronics (one performer: see list of available equipment on
the festival website or contact Eric Honour with questions)

To be considered for performance by the Fire Wire Ensemble, works must
include live electronics and at least one of the acoustic instruments
listed above; works incorporating more than one acoustic instrument
are preferred. Please note: scores involving percussion should use
instruments that are either listed in our available percussion or
easily constructable. Please contact Eric Honour with any questions
about percussion instrument availability before submitting the work
for consideration.

electronics, or in chamber ensembles of up to 8 performers):

Please submit up to two compositions for consideration. For each work,

a contact sheet with the composer’s name, address, telephone numbers,
email addresses, a list of works submitted with durations, and a brief
bio. Please include a statement about whether or not you commit to
attend the conference if your music is selected. If you wish your
materials returned to you, please include an SASE. Materials sent
without an SASE will be deposited in the UCM music library for future
programming consideration.

Selections will be made by the ensemble directors and performers, in
coordination with the conference host.  Difficulty level and available
rehearsal time will be a factor in all selection decisions.  Selected
composers will be notified on or about January 31, 2010.

Selected composers must provide all required performance materials.
The University of Central Missouri will not pay rental costs.

Call for Papers:

This year marks the second annual new music festival at the University
of Central Missouri. In keeping with this anniversary, we have
organized the festival around the theme of "dualities."

Many binary issues are well-researched in musicological study, from
bipartite form to the bit-by-bit nature of digital audio, but the
concept of "two-ness" still gives rise to a number of fruitful lines
of inquiry. Various dichotomies (e.g. new/old, good/bad,
complex/simple) present paths into understandings of music, as well as
providing the bases for any number of compositions. Relationships
between composers, performers, and audiences are also deeply shaped by
dualities. The tensions arising from the self/other dichotomy are
inherent in any collaborative team and in some cases can form the
foundation for the team's success. Papers on any topic relating to
music since 1945 are welcome, but we particularly invite scholars to
consider issues relating to dualities in music.

The submission deadline (postmark) for proposals is December 4, 2009.
We prefer to receive these proposals via email to Eric Honour in PDF,
MS Word, or RTF format.  Presenters will be notified by January 31,
2010.

Proposals should include an abstract (ca. 500 words) addressing the
general subject, originality, methodology, and conclusions, and may
also include supporting documentation as needed. Please specify any
audio-visual equipment needed for the session. The maximum time limit
for individual papers will be 20 minutes; paper presentations will be
limited to 30 minutes total, including time for questions.
