The town of Old Crow is home to a community of about 250 people, most of whom belong to the Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation. Old Crow is in the North of the Yukon Territory in Canada, on the Porcupine river, 128 Km. north of the Arctic Circle. The town can only be reached by plane, snowmobile or boat, since there are no roads that lead to Old Crow. The Vuntut Gwitchin rely on the land and on Porcupine Caribou for their food, clothing, crafts and medicines. Unfortunately the migratory caribou are threatened by oil and gas companies, with plans to develop areas that include their calving grounds and winter refuge. More on Old Crow: http://www.oldcrow.ca
The piece explores methods of approaching a remote culture. The actors move between „learning stations“ that I have developed for them, which reflect my own research methods. Music, images, text and dance are reproduced in differing degrees of distance to their original sources, filtered by my persepective and those of the performers.
The music is based upon fiddle music from the Gwitchin Nation, and its convolution with segments of a lecture by Brandon Kyikavichik (Old Crow, Yukon) about the Porcupine Caribou. In diesem Stück spiegele ich meine künstlerische Forschung zur Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation Community in Old Crow (Kanada) wider. Old Crow liegt im Norden des Yukon Territory in Kanada (an der Grenze zu Alaska), am Porcupine Fluss, 128 km nördlich des Polarkreises, und hat eine Einwohnerzahl von ca. 250 Menschen. Den Ort kann man nur mit Flugzeug oder Kanu erreichen, da keinen Straßen dorthin führen. Die Vuntut Gwitchin ernähren sich durch Fallenstellen, Jagen und Angeln. Die Caribou, nordamerikanische Rentiere, sind ihre Hauptquelle für Nahrung und Kleidung und sind zugleich zentral für ihre Kultur. Leider lebt die Gemeinde seit Jahren unter ständiger Bedrohung durch Mineralölunternehmen, die dort durch den Permafrost nach Öl bohren wollen, was nicht nur die Caribou sondern die Kultur, Gesellschaft und Völkerstamm in Old Crow in Gefahr bringen würde.

Die Schauspielern bewegen sich zwischen verschiedene “Lernstationen”, die meine eigene Lernprozess schildert. Rechercheweisen, Musik, Tanz und Bilder werden in verschiedenen Graden von Distanz zu ihren Originalquellen wiedergegeben. Geschichten, Informationen, Musik, Medien werden verschieden kombiniert. Ziel ist, kaleidoskopisch meine persönliche Nähe und Ferne zu dieser Kultur zu beleuchten.
Hauptquelle der Musik sind 2 verschiedene Transkriptionen von Fiedelmusik der Gwitchin Völker aus Nord-Kanada/ USA (Alaska: Fort Yukon, Yukon: Old Crow, Northwest Territories)sowie eine lineare Überlagerung von dieser Fiedelmusik und Ausschnitten aus einem Vortrag von Brandon Kyikavichik (Old Crow, Yukon) über Caribou. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgvQoYVJAXQ&feature=youtu.be&t=1h13m27s) Die Traditionelle Widerholungsschema von der Gwitchin Fiedelmusik wird behalten, und konkurrierende Zweier- und Driermetren, die in der Musik vorhanden sind, werden hervorgehoben. Die Musik bewegt sich zwischen nicht- imitierende Bearbeitungsformen hin zu Bearbeitungen, die der Ausgangs-Quelle ähneln. Intervallen, Register und Tempi sind gedehnt oder zusammengepresst, Instrumentalklangfarben augetauscht.
