Upcoming Workshops @ N.K.

iPhone Development with Chris Jeffs
Sundays 20, 27 November, 4 December 2011 from 13.00-18.00

So you’ve started developing for the iPhone, experimented with Objective-C and the user interface and made some apps of your own. Now what? The depths of the Cocoa Touch framework are so enormous that almost anything is possible. In this 3 part workshop using the latest iOS 5, we will explore just a few of these possibilities, the aim being to take away a finished app at the end of each session. The workshop will have an emphasis on interactive, creative and fun projects. Each week a topic will be discussed, some ideas presented and a walkthrough for the basis of the app will take place. Some code snippets and helper classes are provided, and from then on it’s up to each participant to use their imagination to customise the end result.

Session 1 (20 Nov): Draw
The course begins with the making a “drawing” app – using the finger on the screen to make pictures with lines and other shapes, possibly animating them, and saving the results to the user’s picture library. But this will be more than just a mini-photoshop! It will allow the user to collaborate with others nearby, using bluetooth communication.

Session 2 (27 Nov): Camera
The inclusion of two cameras on recent iOS devices opens up many possibilities. The app we will make this week goes beyond the obvious to include pixel manipulation (slit-scanning, action freezing) and alternative representations of the data (pixellated or raster display.)

Session 3 (4 Dec): Game
iOS 5 makes it easier than ever to use OpenGLES, the standard graphics programming environment for mobile phones. We will be making a simple 2D game, exploring the topics of collision detection, sound effects and using the accelerometer, and possibly reusing the bluetooth communication code from week 1.

The workshop will be given by Chris Jeffs, author of 4 apps on the store that have been released this year. More info can be found at http://chrisjeffs.com.

IMPORTANT!

This workshop is aimed at intermediate iPhone programmers. For information about the level of ability required, please visit http://www.chrisjeffs.com/idt2011info.html

The use of XCode 4.2, and an iPhone / iPod Touch / iPad running iOS5 is compulsory. For the Camera workshop, a device with at least one camera is needed. No installation help will be provided.

Max 6 Beginners Workshop with Pure – Programming with Max – Beginner workshop
5 Days/ Monday December 5 – Friday December 9 2011, Mon-Fri 18.00 – 22.30 daily

Max is a programming language based on a graphical interface that connects sound synthesis, sampling, video and Open GL 3-D graphics, MIDI, network-communication, sensors and more. Based on a concept similar to modular synthesizers Max is relatively easy to learn and equally suitable for both small and complex projects. This workshop will focus on the music making possibilities of Max but can include working with visuals by wish of the participants. It will give an introduction to the concept of Max and show strategies for how to approach and solve problems common to beginners. No prior knowledge of Max or programming is required.

Read more about Max at http://cycling74.com/whatismax/

The workshop will be held in English and German.

Requirements:
* Own Computer (Mac OS X/Windows) IMPORTANT: with an authorised Max (latest
version), or a running Demo (download a 30-Days demo from

http://cycling74.com/downloads/).

* Basic knowledge in computer based music creation
* Headphones
* If possible bring your own MIDI Controller/Keyboard (plus iPhone/Android-based
Phone, iPad/Android-based Pad, Lemur, wii, joystick,…)

Teacher: Pure has been using Max since the last thirteen years as his main tool for music creation. As well as being an experienced Max instructor who has taught in Universities and Media Labs all over Europe since 2001, he is has also released many albums with such labels as Mego, Crónica and Staalplaat. More info about him can be found at:

Field Effect with Martin Howse

January 20, 21, 22 2012!
A three day workshop actively exploring the effects of electromagnetic fields on living systems; on the human body and the human psyche. The effects of complex field interactions with such systems, particularly with the psyche, are largely unknown and open to debate. Field Effect proposes to obtain first-hand,experimental knowledge of these relations, using DIY technologies. Experiments already suggest links between low frequency electromagnetic emissions and experiences of hauntings and UFO sightings.

The first two days will be devoted to the construction of devices to both generate and measure magnetic fields and to examine the effects of these fields on living systems (such as plants or moulds), and on the body and psyche (measuring skin temperature, skin resistance, heartrate). In parallel, a series of experimental situations will be constructed to provide insights into the interactions between complex spectral ecologies (communication technologies such as wireless networks, mobile phone bases, TV, radio, power lines, motors, all electronic devices) and life.

Participants will learn how to construct simple devices to measure heart rate and skin resistance, how to interface these to software and log/interpret results and how to intervene within electromagnetic space. No previous knowledge of fields required.

Maximum nr. of participants: 12
