Tom Virkus: The semantic expression space of UX sounds on the functional level of product communication. An exploratory study with sound designers and consumers

This study investigates the communicative potential of user experience sounds in modern technological products, focusing on how effectively they convey functional information to users. Drawing on the expertise of professionals in product sound design and related fields, we identified common goals pursued through the use of UX sounds in real-world technological consumer products. A large collection of UX sounds was then evaluated by a sample of 234 individuals from the UK and Germany to assess their effectiveness in meeting manufacturers‘ communication objectives. Using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, the study identifies the key communication goals that can be successfully and coherently achieved through UX sounds. The results ultimately led to the construction of a two-part standardized measurement instrument called FMUXs that can be used to evaluate UX sounds in a time-efficient manner. Limitations were noted due to the relatively small sample size and high correlation between certain expression dimensions. Nonetheless, the study provides a foundation for future research using Music Information Retrieval (MIR) techniques and Deep Learning applications to further refine the design and application of UX sounds.
