Studies on Colour Field Modulation
I/O – CARLOS SANTOS | ULRICH MITZLAFF
Dear Event Programmers,
We would like to propose for your event programming a concert/performance with the duo I/O Carlos Santos (electronics, objects) and Ulrich Mitzlaff (cello, objects).
We were presenting „Studies on Color Field Modulation“, that is now released on CD, recently live in concert with the two pieces “BLAU” and “ORANGE”. As mentioned in the title of the program, the project is inspired by contemporary artistic movements of an abstract, non-narrative nature, which we consider to be a benefit for contemporary art spaces, in the sense and context of promoting a reflection about sonic art in relation with visual art, opening new perspectives of a musical perception that might be interesting for your audience.
Starting in 1998, the duo I/O works in the field of electroacoustic composition in real time, using free improvisation methodologies focused on elements and forms of abstractionism and experimentalism. This idea is materialized in site-specific projects and concerts played, despite each of the musicians having their own personal path. The present concept of this CD and show comes from an invitation to perform a concert at the Contemporary Music Festival (2014), at the Vostell Museum of Contemporary Art, Malpartida de Cáceres (Spain), with the piece „Blau“.
The CD “Studies on Color Field Modulation” is showing a new version of “Blau” that works around everyday materials, namely aluminum wrapped around the instruments (cello and computer) that are slowly being unwrapped, revealing an infinity of affirmations, during the development of the piece, in an almost “performative” way of a “fluxian” posture. “Orange” marks a more dialectical partnership between the musicians, composing in an electroacoustic context.
Attached to this e-mail you find a review by Ettore Garzia on “Studies on Color Field Modulation”, published in the Italian online magazine “Percorsi Musicali”.
