the
outside
in
Ellen Fellmann
is a German composer, artist and film
director working at the intersection between musical
and visual composition. Her practice is influenced by
the thoughts of the philosopher Jacques Derrida and his
theory of meaning. She thematises the differences as well
as the contact-planes and the capability of communication
between music, (moving) image and space.
Fellmann studied music, classical vocal art and piano, as
well as musicology and philosophy in Munich and Berlin.
Her work includes instrumental and electro-acoustic
compositions, multi-channel sound choreographies,
audiovisual installations as well as documentary films on
music. She has received several awards (among others
from the New York Film Festival) and has exhibited
internationally (among others at ZKM Karlsruhe, Maison
de l’Architecture Paris, Borusan Music House Istanbul,
EMOP Berlin). Since 2010 she has been teaching at
the University of the Arts in Bern / Switzerland. In 2015
she begins curating and producing the EXTENDED
COMPOSITIONS exhibition and concert project in
Germany, replicated in 2017 in Switzerland. In 2017 and
2018 she has participated to several artist residency
programmes and presentations in Morocco (among others
Cafe Tissardmine, Caravane Tighmert, LE 18, le Cube)
and deepened her fascination for the country, which she
has captured since 2001 after a first working stay in Fes
at the Festival de la Musique Sacrée du Monde.
Ellen Fellmann
est une compositrice, artiste et vidéaste
allemande dont le travail se situe au croisement entre
la composition musicale et visuelle. Son travail est
particulièrement influencé par la pensée du philosophe
Jacques Derrida et sa théorie de la signification. Elle
thématise les différences tout comme les points de
contact et les possibilités de communication entre
musique, image en mouvement et espace.
Fellmann s’est formée en musique, en art vocal classique
et piano et elle a étudié la musicologie et la philosophie
à Munich et Berlin. Son travail inclut compositions
électro-acoustiques, chorégraphies sonores multicanales,
installations audiovisuelles et documentaires sur la
musique. Son travail a reçu plusieurs prix (entre autres
celui du New York Film Festival) et a été exposé à
multiples reprises à l’international (ZKM Karlsruhe,
Maison de l’Architecture Paris, Bosuran Music House
Istanbul, EMOP Berlin). Depuis 2010 elle enseigne
à l’université de Bern / Suisse. En 2015 elle est
commissaire / productrice de l’exposition et concert
EXTENDED COMPOSITIONS en Allemagne, répétée en
2017 en Suisse. En 2017/2018 elle a participé à plusieurs
programmes de résidence et présentations au Maroc,
avec, entre autres, Cafe Tissardmine, Caravane Tighmert,
LE 18, le Cube où s’accroît sa fascination pour le pays,
qu’elle explore depuis 2001 grâce à une première phase
de travail dans le cadre du Festival de Fès des Musiques
Sacrées du Monde.
