Betreff: 50 years of electronic music and audiovisuals at the Folkwang University of the Arts

Dear DEGEM friends and colleagues,

From November 11th to 13th, the Institute for Computer Music and Electronic Media (ICEM) is celebrating 50 years of electronic music and audiovisuals at the Folkwang University of the Arts (Essen) with a three-day symposium at the Werden campus.

With special guests Dirk Reith, Ludger Bruemmer, Marta Gentilucci, Maja S. K. Ratkje, Claudia Robles-Angel, Kees Tazelaar, and Hans Tutschku, plus many current and past Folkwang students and friends, we’ll present six concerts of electronic music made at the Folkwang and elsewhere. We’ll also have twelve discussion rounds on topics such as „What is the relationship of electronic music today to that of the 1950/60s avant-garde?”, „How should we teach electronic music?”, „Does electronic music still exist or has it been subsumed into other genres?”, „To what extent does technology influence or even determine the aesthetics of the electronic composer?”, and „Does (electronic) music need a visual element?”.

The full programme ist available at https://icem.folkwang-uni.de/~mde/ICEM_Booklet_Web-final.pdf

Best wishes,

Michael Edwards
