The School of Music at Ball State University (www.bsu.edu/music) seeks qualified applicants for graduate studies in music theory/composition for the 2020-21 academic year. With approximately 85-90 graduate students, we pride ourselves on the personal and professional attention given to each student.
The Ball State composition program features:
• Annual recording sessions for a large ensemble (choirs, orchestra, wind ensemble, symphony band, etc.)
• Reading sessions and performance opportunities by guest ensembles; past guests have included the Fifth House Ensemble and the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), etc.
• Annual Festival of New Music in the spring. The 50th Annual Festival of New Music will be on March 26-28, 2020
• Faculty and Student Composers Forums, the EM Concert Series (electronic music)
• Weekly Composers’ Seminar with presentations from faculty, graduate students as well as guest composers and performers
• An active SCI student chapter
• New Music Ensemble and Electroacoustic Ensemble performing faculty and student compositions
The School of Music also features state-of-the-arts facilities. Built in 2004, the 600-seat Sursa Performance Hall and the Music Instruction Building host nine professional studios and nearly 10,000 square feet dedicated to music media production, computer music and composition. Graduate assistantships are regularly assigned in the areas below. Please check with the Office of Graduate Programs in Music on current openings. The following graduate assistantships are typically available every year or in alternate years:
• teaching assistantship in music theory (freshman and sophomore courses)
• teaching assistantship in aural skills (freshman and sophomore courses)
• graduate manager of Central Recording Services
• assist in New Music Ensemble
• teach/assist in computer music and acoustics
• teach/assist in music media production and industry
• teach/assist in music history and musicology
• other assistantships in the areas of performance, conducting, and music education
Assistantships include a remission of the major part of tuition and fees (remaining tuition and fees typically total about $1500 per semester) and an annual stipend as follows: Masters – $7,000; Artist Diploma – $7,100; Doctorate – $12,000. Assistantships are renewable upon evaluation: a second year for Masters and Artist Diploma; up to three years for Doctorate. Please refer to the current Graduate Handbook.
