Giga-Hertz-Preisverleihung mit Konzert der PreisträgerInnen 2020

Die Giga-Hertz-Produktionspreise gehen dieses Jahr an PreisträgerInnen mit einem Fokus auf immersive, audiovisuelle Werke. Zusätzlich zur feierlichen Preisverleihung werden die ausgezeichneten Kompositionen aufgeführt. Die Verleihung findet am Abend des 28. November 2020 in digitaler Anwesenheit aller PreisträgerInnen statt.

Der mit 10.000 Euro dotierte Giga-Hertz-Hauptpreis 2020 geht in diesem Jahr an Alvin Lucier. Die Kompositionen des USamerikanischen Künstlers beeinflussen seit Mitte der 1960erJahre nachhaltig die neue, experimentelle Musik und die Klangkunst. Als Forschender beschäftigt er sich in seinen Werken mit der phänomenologischen Verschmelzung von Akustik, Stimme und Klang als physischer Äußerung – sei sie elektronisch, instrumental oder anhand von Eigenschwingungen mikrophonierter Gegenstände wie beispielsweise Vasen – und als Partner in geteiltem Gespräch. Vier Kompositionen aus dem Lebenswerk des Komponisten werden am Sonntag, 29.11.2020, ab 19 Uhr im Livestream zu hören sein. Zusätzlich wird ein weiteres, als zweitätige Installation aufgebautes Werk des Klangpoeten online erlebbar sein.

Aus rund 130 internationalen Einreichungen nominierte die Jury außerdem zwei herausragende Werke: Chris Cheung alias h0nh1m erhält für die audiovisuelle Performance RadianceScape 2016 den mit 5.000 Euro dotierten Giga-Hertz-Produktionspreis. Das als fortlaufendes Forschungsprojekt angelegte Stück visualisiert live die radioaktiven Strahlungsdaten verschiedener Großstädte und setzt diese in Relation zu den Strahlungsdaten von Tschernobyl und Fukushima. Der zweite Produktionspreis, ebenfalls verbunden mit einem Preisgeld von 5.000 Euro, geht an Mark Pilkington für seine Komposition Hidden Forest. Die algorithmische, audiovisuelle Performance kombiniert eine Vielzahl an Medienelementen und untersucht das Zusammenspiel von Technologie und Ökologie, von natürlichen und künstlichen Entitäten. Außerdem erhalten das Künstlerinnenduo Annie Rüfenacht & Sandra Schmid für die audiovisuelle Performance Kataklasit als auch Siamak Anvari für sein 24-kanaliges Fixed-Media-Stück Hafthasht je eine lobende Erwähnung.

Der Jury gehörten in diesem Jahr Prof. Ludger Brümmer (Komponist und Leiter ZKM | Hertz-Labor), Prof. Dr. h.c. mult. Peter Weibel (künstlerischer Leiter ZKM), Detlef Heusinger (künstlerischer Leiter des SWR Experimentalstudios), Dr. Palle Dahlstedt (Komponist, Professor für »Art & Technology« an der Aalborg Universität und Wissenschaftler für computergestützte Kreativität an der Gothenburg Universität), Björn Gottstein (Musikwissenschaftler und künstlerischer Leiter der Donaueschinger Musiktage), Natasha Barrett (Komponistin und Professorin für »Composition, Music Theory and Music« an der Norwegian Academy of Music), François Bonnet (Komponist und künstlerischer Leiter der Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM)).

Giga-Hertz Award ceremony and concert by the laureates 2020

The Giga-Hertz Production Awards 2020 go to laureates who have been focusing on immersive, audiovisual works. In addition to the festive award ceremony, the prizewinning compositions will be performed. The award ceremony will take place in the evening of November 28, 2020 in the digital presence of the award winners.

This year, the Giga-Hertz Main Award 2020, with prize money of 10,000 EUR, goes to Alvin Lucier. Since the mid-1960s, the compositions of the American artist have had a lasting influence on new, experimental music and sound art. As a researcher, his works deal with the phenomenological fusion of acoustics, voice and sound as physical expression – electronic, instrumental or based on the natural oscillations of microphoned objects such as vases – and as partners in shared conversation. Four compositions from the composer’s life’s work will be heard via live stream on Sunday, November 29, 2020 from 7 pm CEST. In addition, a further work will be available online as a two-day installation.

Moreover, the jury nominated two outstanding works out of about 130 international submissions: Chris Cheung alias h0nh1m will receive the Giga-Hertz Production Award worth 5,000 EUR for his audiovisual performance RadianceScape 2016. The piece, designed as an ongoing research project, visualizes live the radioactive radiation data of various large cities and relates them to the radiation data of Chernobyl and Fukushima. The second Production Award, also connected with 5,000 EUR, goes to Mark Pilkington for his composition Hidden Forest. The algorithmic, audiovisual performance combines a variety of media elements and investigates the interplay of technology and ecology, of natural and artificial entities. In addition, the artists Annie Rüfenacht & Sandra Schmid receive an Honorary Mention for their audiovisual performance Kataklasit as well as Siamak Anvari for the electro-acoustic piece Hafthasht for 24 channels.
