PhD program in Computer Music and Multimedia
The Department of Music at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA, invites applications to the PhD program in Computer Music and Multimedia. The program focuses on the analysis and production of original multidisciplinary works of art, exploring the use of music and sound in combination with video, performance, and text.
We encourage applications from students from a wide range of musical practices, including those with outstanding acoustic training who wish to incorporate video and electronics into their artistic practice. The program consists of advanced examinations of theoretical, technical, cultural, and aesthetic issues surrounding music and multimedia production.
PhD students participate in the activities at the MEME studios (Multimedia and Electronic Music Experiments), a program that includes production and research facilities, visiting faculty and speakers, concert and installation presentations, and advanced-level courses. MEME is known for art and research that traverse the boundaries between acoustic composition, electronic music, installation, video, theater and dance.
MEME promotes research in all of these areas, with additional expertise in instrument design, sound art, real-time systems and gesture tracking. Local, national and international artists are featured regularly at MEME concerts, symposia, and workshops.
All PhD students receive full funding for 5 years, including costs for tuition plus stipends (for fellowships and teaching assistantships). Online application is through the Brown University Graduate School website: https://www.brown.edu/academics/gradschool/
