Verlängerung des Einreichungszeitraumes für den Giga-Hertz-Preis 2021

Seit dem Jahr 2007 verleihen das ZKM | Hertz-Labor (ehemaliges Institut für Musik und Akustik) und das SWR Experimentalstudio alljährlich den Giga-Hertz-Preis für elektronische Musik und Soundart.

2021 ist der Giga-Hertz-Preis insgesamt mit 20.000 € Preisgeld dotiert. Der 10.000 € umfassende Giga-Hertz-Hauptpreis für das Lebenswerk wird durch Vorschläge der Jury ermittelt und nicht aus den Einreichungen ausgewählt. Die beiden mit 5.000 € dotierten, international ausgerichteten Giga-Hertz-Produktionspreise dienen der Initiierung und Förderung neuer Projekte und richten sich an Klangkünstler:innen und Komponist:innen elektronischer bzw. elektroakustischer Musik sowie Mixed Music. Dieses Jahr gibt es mit »BioMedien« einen Themenschwerpunkt, der zumindest für einen der Preise relevant wird. Peter Weibel umreißt das Thema mit folgenden Worten: »Nach den Bewegungsmaschinen des 19. Jahrhunderts und den Bewegtbild-Medien des 20. Jahrhunderts eröffnet sich im 21. Jahrhundert der Horizont der BioMedien. Gesucht werden biomimetische, insbesondere akustische Kunstwerke, die lebensähnliches Verhalten aufweisen, d.h. die autogenerativ, autopoietisch, responsiv, KI-unterstützt und algorithmisch gesteuert sind. Expect the Unexpected: Das Unerwartete, Nicht-Vorhersehbare, Nicht-Planbare, Nicht-Steuerbare kann Teil des algorithmischen Prozesses sein.«

Darüber hinaus sind auch Einreichungen außerhalb des Themenschwerpunktes willkommen.

Die Kandidat:innen für die Produktionspreise werden auf der Grundlage einer nicht älter als fünf Jahre alten Komposition und eines Vorschlags für ein neues geplantes Werk beurteilt. Der Fokus der Produktionspreise liegt auf der besonderen Qualität des eingereichten Werkes. Der Wettbewerb wird jedes Jahr öffentlich ausgeschrieben und steht Komponist:innen jeden Alters offen. Die Werke werden anonymisiert bewertet.

Um die Diversität im Bereich der elektronischen Musik abbilden zu können, rufen wir alle Personen, die sich von der Ausschreibung angesprochen fühlen explizit dazu auf, sich zu bewerben.

Alle eingereichten Werke sollten mindestens durch eines der folgenden Kriterien beschrieben werden:

Komposition für Live-Elektronik
Fixed-Media-Komposition
Mixed Music
Audiovisuelle Komposition
Konzertinstallation
Transmediale Komposition
Experimentelle Klangperformance
Interdisziplinäre Performance (mit einschlägiger Musik- oder Soundkomponente)

Preisgeld:

Der Giga-Hertz-Produktionspreis beinhaltet einen Zuschuss, mit dem die Gewinner:innen ihren eingereichten Projektvorschlag am ZKM | Hertz-Labor in Karlsruhe oder am SWR Experimentalstudio Freiburg realisieren können. Technischer Support und Hilfestellung durch das jeweilige Studio ist im Preisgeld enthalten.

Die Gewinnenden erhalten 2.000 € als Stipendium direkt ausgezahlt und bis zu 3.000 € können verwendet werden für die während der Produktion und Uraufführung des neuen Werkes entstehenden Kosten. Die Uraufführung des neuen Werkes findet ausschließlich im Rahmen des Giga-Hertz-Preis Festivals statt.

Durch den Produktionszuschuss werden Reisekosten zum/ vom Studio und zur Uraufführung sowie Kost und Logis während der Produktionsarbeit abgedeckt. Diese Gelder werden zur Umsetzung eines Werks mithilfe von Elektronik in einem von der Jury ausgewählten Studio genutzt. Dabei obliegt die Wahl des Studios der Jury und richtet sich nach der ästhetischen Orientierung der Komponist:innen sowie den spezifischen Details des zu realisierenden Projekts.

Der Arbeitsaufenthalt sollte sich auf mindestens zwei Monate am ZKM | Hertz-Labor erstrecken bzw. auf etwa zwei bis vier Wochen am SWR Experimentalstudio. Es ist angedacht, dass das neue Werk während der Preisverleihung des Giga-Hertz-Preises im nächsten Jahr uraufgeführt und eventuell im Radio ausgestrahlt wird. Allerdings besteht im Hinblick auf die Gewinner:innen der Giga-Hertz-Produktionspreise von Seiten des ZKM | Karlsruhe keine gesetzliche Verpflichtung zu speziellen Dienstleistungen oder zur Ausstrahlung der Gewinnerwerke oder der mithilfe der Preisgelder realisierten neuen Projekte im Radio.

Beschreibung des eingereichten Werks mit max. 2000 Zeichen inkl. Leerzeichen
Audio- bzw. Videodatei(en) mit der vollständigen Realisation des Werkes, technische Informationen zum Werk, sowie optional die Partitur und Bilddateien zum Werk.
Projektexposé zu einem neuen, noch zu realisierenden Werk am ZKM | Hertz-Labor oder im SWR Experimentalstudio, sowie technische Informationen zu diesem Werk.

Bitte beachten Sie:

Die Bewerbung muss bis zum 28. Mai 2021 vollständig vorliegen.
Das eingereichte Werk sollte nicht älter als fünf Jahre sein.
Bei anderen Preisverleihungen prämierte Werke dürfen eingereicht werden.
Beim Giga-Hertz-Preis nicht prämierte Werke dürfen erneut eingereicht werden.
Je Komponist:in kann nur ein Stück eingereicht werden, unabhängig von der Kategorie!
Unvollständige Bewerbungen werden nicht zum Wettbewerb zugelassen.
Nach Eingang aller notwendigen Unterlagen erhalten die Bewerber:innen eine E-Mail zur Bestätigung ihrer Teilnahme.
Alle Einreichungen werden archiviert, mit der Teilnahme akzeptieren die Bewerber:innen die Archivierung.
Im Interesse aller Teilnehmer:innen sollten die Bewerber:innen (oder ein vom/ von der Bewerber:in benannte:r Vertreter:in) unter der jeweils auf dem Bewerbungsformular angegebenen Adresse erreichbar sein.
Die Preisträger:innen verpflichten sich zur Teilnahme an der Preisverleihung am 27.11.2021, um ihren Preis persönlich entgegenzunehmen.
Im eingereichten Werk dürfen keine weiteren urheberrechtlich geschützten Elemente verwendet worden sein.
Die Urheber:innen der Produktionspreise garantieren dem ZKM | Karlsruhe die Aufführung, die Speicherung, die ausschnittsweise Nutzung des Werkes für Werbung in Bild und Ton, Social Media und auf der Homepage des ZKM | Karlsruhe, sowie die wissenschaftliche Nutzung des Werkes.
Das eingereichte Werk soll erkennbar unter Einsatz elektronischer/ technischer Mittel realisiert worden sein. Zumindest sollte der Einsatz elektronischer Mittel dokumentiert sein.
Eine Aufnahme/ Produktion/ Klangdatei des Werkes muss der Bewerbung beigefügt sein.
Die Preisträger:innen verpflichten sich, die im Rahmen des Wettbewerbs produzierten Werke während eines Aufenthalts am ZKM | Hertz-Labor oder am SWR Experimentalstudio zu realisieren. Die Dauer des Aufenthaltes sollte am ZKM | Hertz-Labor mindestens acht Wochen bzw. etwa zwei bis vier Wochen am SWR Experimentalstudio betragen.
Das Projektexposé muss gegebenenfalls modifiziert werden, um den verfügbaren Produktionsressourcen der jeweiligen Studios zu entsprechen.
Arbeiten, welche die oben genannten Anforderungen nicht erfüllen, werden nicht zum Wettbewerb zugelassen und der Jury nicht vorgestellt!

Mitarbeitende der organisierenden Einrichtungen, Sponsoren, Preisverleiher und Schirmherren des Giga-Hertz-Preises sowie Mitglieder der Jury sind von der Teilnahme ausgeschlossen.

Extension of time submission period Giga-Hertz Award 2021

Since 2007, the ZKM | Hertz-Lab (formerly Institute for Music and Acoustics) and the SWR Experimentalstudio have awarded the annual Giga-Hertz Prize for electronic music and sound art.

The Giga-Hertz Award 2021 is endowed with a total of 20.000 € in prize money. The Giga-Hertz main prize for the lifetime achievement, which is 10.000 €, will be determined by suggestion from the jury and is not selected from the applications. The two internationally oriented Giga-Hertz Production Prizes, each endowed with 5.000 €, serve to initiate and promote new projects and are aimed at sound artists and composers of electronic and electroacoustic music as well as mixed music. This year, there is a topical focus on »BioMedia«, which will be relevant for at least one of the prizes. Peter Weibel outlines the topic with the following words: »After the moving machines of the 19th century and the moving image media of the 20th century, the horizon of BioMedia opens up in the 21st century. We are looking for biomimetic, especially acoustic, artworks that exhibit life-like behavior, i.e., that are autogenerative, autopoietic, responsive, AI-assisted, and algorithmically controlled. Expect the Unexpected: the unexpected, the unpredictable, the unplannable, the uncontrollable can be part of the algorithmic process.«

Beyond that, applications outside of the topical focus are also welcome.

Candidates for the Production Prizes will be judged on the basis of a composition not older than five years and a proposal for a new projected work. The focus of the Production Prizes is on the exceptional quality of the submitted work. The competition is advertised publicly each year and is open to composers of all ages. The compositions will be judged anonymously.

In order to reflect the diversity in the field of electronic music, we explicitly call upon all persons who feel addressed by the call to apply.

All compositions submitted should meet at least one of the following criteria:

Composition for live electronics
Fixed-Media composition
Mixed Music
Audiovisual composition
Concert installation
Transmedia composition
Experimental sound performance
Interdisciplinary performance (with relevant music or sound components)

Prize Money:

The Giga-Hertz Production Prize includes a grant with which the winners can realize their submitted project proposal at the ZKM | Hertz-Lab in Karlsruhe or at the SWR Experimentalstudio Freiburg. Technical support and assistance from the respective studio are included in the prize money.

Winners will receive 2.000 € paid directly as a stipend, and up to 3.000 € can be used for expenses incurred during the production and premiere of the new work. The premiere of the new work will take place exclusively within the framework of the Giga-Hertz Award Festival.

The production grant will cover travel expenses to/from the studio and the world premiere, as well as room and board during the production work. These funds are used to realize a work with the help of electronics in a studio selected by the jury. The choice of the studio depends on the aesthetic orientation of the composer and the specific details of the project to be realized.

The working stay should extend to at least two months at the ZKM | Hertz-Lab or to about two to four weeks at the SWR Experimentalstudio. It is envisaged that the new work will be premiered and possibly broadcast on the radio during the Giga-Hertz Award ceremony next year. However, with regard to the winners of the Giga-Hertz Production Prizes, ZKM | Karlsruhe is under no legal obligation to provide special services or to broadcast the winning works or the new projects realized with the help of the prize money on the radio.

Please note:

The deadline for sending in the complete application is May 28, 2021.
The submitted work should not be older than five years.
Works awarded at other prize-giving ceremonies may be submitted.
Works that did not win an award at the Giga-Hertz Prize may be submitted again.
Only one piece may be submitted per composer, regardless of category!
Incomplete applications will not be admitted to the competition.
After receipt of all necessary documents, the applicants will receive an email confirming their participation.
All submissions will be archived, the applicants accept this archiving by their participation.
In the interest of all participants, the applicants (or a representative appointed by the applicant) should be reachable at the address given on the application form.
The award winners agree to attend the award ceremony on 27.11.2021 to receive their award in person.
No other copyrighted elements may have been used in the submitted work.
The authors of the Production Prizes guarantee the ZKM | Karlsruhe the performance, storage, excerpted use of the work for advertising in image and sound, social media, and on the homepage of the ZKM | Karlsruhe, as well as the scientific use of the work.
The submitted work should have been recognizably realized with the use of electronic/technical means. At the very least, the use of electronic means should be documented.
A recording/production/sound file of the work must be included in the application.
The award winners undertake to realize the works produced within the framework of the competition during a residency at the ZKM | Hertz-Lab or at the SWR Exerimentalstudio. The duration of the residency should be at least eight weeks at the ZKM | Hertz-Lab or about two to four weeks at the SWR Experimentalstudio.
The project synopsis may need to be modified to fit the available production resources of the respective studios.
Works that do not comply with the above requirements will not be admitted to the competition and will not be presented to the jury!
Employees of the organizing institutions, sponsors, awarding bodies and patrons of the Giga-Hertz Award as well as members of the jury are excluded from participating.
