This workshop intensive with Gordon Monahan will uncover unique sonic properties of the natural and built environment that would normally go unnoticed. It is also a rare opportunity to work side by side with Monahan, a Canadian sound and media artist that has created many seminal works since the late 70’s and is a recipient of the Governor General’s prize for Media Arts.
The presence of trees, empty space, autumn winds and the quiet ambience of a rural property outside South River, Ontario provide the context for this fall weekend intensive of workshops. Participants will use small motors and contact microphones to interact with space in a unique way – discovering hidden sounds from both built structures and natural elements in the environment. Learn how to make ‘balanced’ contact pickups using inexpensive materials, and how motors can be substituted for loudspeakers to reproduce audio.
