Assistant or Associate Professor in Expressive Mechatronics and Robotics
The School of Arts, Media and Engineering (https://artsmediaengineering.asu.edu), part of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy (https://semte.engineering.asu.edu), part of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University are seeking outstanding candidates for a joint tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2019 in the broad area of Expressive Mechatronics and Robotics. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in development of platforms, architectures, and algorithms for the enhanced dynamics and control of robotic systems and/or animated physical objects. Specific areas of interest may include but are not limited to robotic systems that exhibit embodied movement and actions coordinated with human or social activity and interaction, mechatronics with soft materials, or artistically-inspired mechanical design for kinetic activity including articulated movement, locomotion, propulsion, etc. We seek faculty to bridge cutting-edge engineering research in emerging mechatronics, physically actuated systems, semi-autonomous/autonomous systems with the inspirations of creative applications such as expressive gestural interfaces, or kinetic sculpture. Appointment may be made at the Assistant or Associate rank commensurate with candidate’s experience and accomplishments.

The joint appointment will be in the School of Arts, Media and Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering Program in the School for Engineering of Matter, Transport and Energy. We are particularly interested in candidates fostering inter-disciplinary scholarly collaboration, including but not limited to engineering, science, health, arts, and/or humanities. The successful candidate is expected to enhance the collaborations between the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering, develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program, develop and teach new undergraduate and graduate curriculum for in-class and online courses, advise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students, undertake service activities within the university, in the professional community, and at the national level and further develop connections to industry.

Arizona State University’s model for the New American University dissolves the barriers between disciplines and fosters collaboration among diverse units. We also assume major responsibility for the economic, social and cultural vitality of the communities that surround us. ASU is a place where local solutions have a global impact. More than 100,000 students and 3,400 faculty make ASU their academic home in the metropolitan Phoenix area – the nation’s fifth largest city. ASU champions intellectual and cultural diversity, welcoming students from all fifty states and more than a hundred nations across the globe.
