METTALURGIE
The project METALLURGIE was initiated by Petra Ronner. Martin Lorenz (percussion), Luc Döbereiner and myself have composed new pieces for Petra (piano) and Martin (percussion), with Luc as sound director, and are to be followed by their interpretation of KONTAKTE by Stockhausen.

HAMMER HAMMER
I began working on my piece HAMMER HAMMER in 2013, when I made recordings in southern German workshops or factories that build pianos and parts of pianos- from Holzwerk Strunz (Pocking) , who find the wood for and produce sounding boards, and Louis Renner GmbH (Stuttgart), who create hammer mechanisms, and Sauter Pianofortemanufakture GmbH & Ko KG (Spaichingen), piano manufacturers. The ownership of the factories has passed through generations, survived hills and dales of political and industrial developments. Technical expertise and tactile knowledge has been passed from person to person, through hands, through words.
In the piece sounds from the factories can be heard, interviews, industrial machines, but also delicate actions of specialists upon refined material, reflecting a trade that has always existed as a fine interplay between humans and machinery to create a tool sensitive enough to transmit complex layers of human expression.
The live musicians co-exist briefly on stage with the stories of the instrument, the texture they create weaves between musical material that might have been influenced by industrial processes ( mechanical rhythms, sequences ) and endeavors for innovation, a personal mark upon a machine. The resulting process of the piece is one in which any perceived schism between industry and art (or technology and expression… machines and humanity) is challenged.

SCHLAGAUFSCHLAGaufschlagaufschlag

SCHLAGAUFSCHLAGaufschlagaufschlag – about the piece
This will be the premiere of my piece for percussion quartet. I originally wrote it for the Music Theatre Piece „SOLOPOLY“ (Nationaltheater Mannheim, 2015) which was conceived of together with Andrea Gronemeyer (director) and Johannes Gaudet (Dramaturg/Musical Director) and the good people of the SCHNAWWL. The title is a spin-off of an early working-title of SOLOPOLY.

The piece will be performed in Freiburg for the first time in it’s brief but concentrated entirety. With a modest instrumentarium a patchwork of relationships is created, which in their turn transform each other. A simple motive, found in salsa and other pop and world music traditions, is investigated and turned inside out. The inherent rhythmic/ pulse tensions in the music are played out and articulated by individual percussionists. Each musician stands alone with their triangle and steel plate. Their uniqueness is inhanced by minor sound-colour differences and spatialisation. Together they weave a structure of pulses that refuse to be reconciled yet create a unique transformational process, perhaps representative of a typical functional multicultural society.
