Call for Participation

Uncertain States

Blurring Waters, Burning Needs.

A conversational sound sculpture

9/10 January 2017

Akademie der Künste, Hanseatenweg

In collaboration with the exhibition project “Uncertain States – Artistic Strategies in States of Emergency” of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the sound and performance artist Alessandro Bosetti, is looking for 10 participants for his new sound performance „Blurring Waters, Burning Needs“. The performance will take place at the Akademie der Künste on 10 January 2017 and will be rehearsed on 9 January 2017. „Blurring Waters, Burning Needs“ is a durational and organised conversation, in which seemingly daily chatter and talk are recomposed in accordance with a series of rules and instructions. The performance group will turn into a speaking choir, which can be at times chaotic, at other times geometric but is always based on free and improvised speech.

The call is open to everyone. You do not need to have any special skills as a performer or singer, or have any previous musical training. What we need, though, are curious people who are willing to speak in front of an audience, to follow a set of rules for spoken improvisation, and who are motivated to meeting new people and open to experiment with their voices.

Background

Alessandro Bosetti is an Italian sound artist and performer, who has been consistently obsessed with languages and verbal interactions such as music for the past two decades. Starting from the seminal composition „The Pool and the Soup“ which was originally written in 2006 for the Berlin vocal ensemble „Die Maulwerker”, Alessandro Bosetti has created and facilitated a number of conversational performances around the world – always with different groups of mainly nonprofessional performers in different contexts (e.g. theaters, private homes, gardens, schools) and in multiple languages (German, English, Korean, Japanese, French, Italian etc.). Each time, the system of rules is upgraded and further developed. For the project “Blurring Waters, Burning Needs” at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Bosetti rethinks this concept in the light of the present urgency. Triggered by the resurgence of conflicts and nationalism, which leads to a fragility in reference to the idea of linguistic koine, Bosetti rethinks his concept for the project “Blurring Waters, Burning Needs” at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, in light of the present urgency.

Procedure

During the preparatory workshop, Alessandro Bosetti will teach a set of approximately 20 gestures and instructions such as „free speech“, „loop“, „pause“ and „sample“ ,which can be easily memorised. During the performance, which will last for 5 hours without interruption, each participant can become a „prompter“ and modulate the casual conversations that will happen using this system of gestures and instructions.

Requirements

Participate in a one-day long preparatory workshop, where you learn and practice a „system“ of modulating and organising daily conversations on 9 January 2017, from 10 am to 6 pm.

– Participate in a 5-hour long uninterrupted performance at Akademie der Künste on the following day: 10 January 2017.

– Be willing to follow a system of rules for speech and conversation and to talk and use their voice in front of an audience.

– Be open to meet and engage in conversations with new people.

Please send your application to weber@adk.de by the 1 December 2016. Please add a short self-description (Who are you? How old are you? What do you do?) in a form you prefer (E-Mail, Video, Sound File) and add a short motivation statement (Why are you interested in participating?), as well a photo of yourself. Each participant will receive a honorarium of 150 Euros in total.
