Lecturer in Sound/Audio Design & Music Technology
Location: Austin, TX

The post will contribute teaching and expertise for the music technology curricular needs of the Department of Theatre and Dance and the Center for Arts and Entertainment Technologies (CAET) in the College of Fine Arts.

The CAET is a multi-purpose research and educational program dedicated to technology and content entrepreneurship in the arts and entertainment industries. It has a performative focus that explores the intersection of advanced production technologies and live performance. This focus is unique among arts and technology centers and informs program design, research, facilities and admissions criteria. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Arts and Entertainment Technologies offers a full range of courses in music and sound technologies, game and mobile media applications development and in emerging technologies for theatrical and event production.

The Department of Theatre and Dance is a world-class education environment that serves as the ultimate creative incubator for the next generation of artists, thinkers and leader in theater and performance. Founded in 1938, the department was the first university theatre program in the state of Texas. Now with 50 full-time faculty and staff and 400 undergraduate and 70 graduate students, the department is one of the largest theatre and dance programs in the country. Our alumni are regularly featured on stage, television and film, and have been recognized with Academy Awards, Tony Awards, Emmy Awards and the Pulitzer Prize in Drama

Teaching possibilities may include the following: Sound Design I, Sound Design II, Digital Audio Workstations, Multi-track Recording, Mixing and Mastering, Virtual Instruments and Live Audio Mixing. Applicants must be able to teach three or more of these courses.


Minimum Qualifications:

MM or MFA degree in Sound Design or Music Technology or Electroacoustic Music Composition

The candidate must demonstrate awareness of contemporary trends as well as the historical developments in a range of professional and independent performance technologies, and have working knowledge of both analog and digital processes, especially sound location recording, and post-production mixing for theatre and musical performance. Knowledge of Pro Tools, Logic X, Ableton Live, Max/MSP and Audition. The ability to migrate across multiple DAWs is preferred. Applicants should have awareness of and sensitivity to educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success in college-level teaching and entertainment industry experience. Including: (a) demonstrated artistic achievement in sound design, theatre and/or electronic music; (b) a demonstrated commitment to teaching sound design, recording, and mixing in a hands-on, student-centered teaching environment; (c) proficiency with professional recording and mixing software and hardware for field and studio; (d) experience with digital technologies and equipment as related to professional-level audio production and post-production; (e) demonstrated ability to produce design support to professional standards and on deadline; (f) demonstrated experience working successfully in terms and in collaboration across disciplines of dance, theatre and/or music. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience in sound design, post sound editing, and final multi-channel mixing and experience mentoring undergraduate students in the conceptualization, planning execution and presentation of sound for their projects.

Responsibilities may include:
Teach introductory and advanced level courses in best practices for sound design for theatre and dance productions, including topics such as: microphone pick patterns, microphone placement, sound isolation, production sound mixing, use of recording equipment, PA systems, supervising and recording, as well as post sound editing, final multi-channel mixing and mastering.
Teach introductory and advanced level courses in best practices in the areas of popular and commercial music. Including but not limited to film music, game music, and contemporary song styles. In addition, teaching entry course work in music and audio technology.
Supervise and work with student crews for audio production for theatre, dance and other events.
