The Department of the Arts in the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (HASS) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY invites applications, expressions of interest, and nominations for the position of Professor and Department Head of Arts.

The department features an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to the visual and musical arts with a focus on the use of experimental techniques and methodologies during artistic conception, creation, and performance. The department offers innovative and highly ranked degree programs that lead to the BS, MFA, and PhD degrees in the Electronic Arts with intentions to develop a BS in Media Engineering and a BFA in Music & Media. In addition to providing these robust programs, the department contributes to interdisciplinary degree programs in Electronic Media Arts & Communication and Games and Simulation Arts & Sciences.

The successful candidate will have a strong record of artistic or scholarly achievement in one of the department’s interdisciplinary fields, a demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary arts creation and production, and outstanding leadership and administrative skills. The candidate must demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing the department as an intellectually and artistically diverse and conceptually innovative field of inquiry within the context of a premier technological university. Applications in the areas of music, visual arts, media arts, improvisational studies, telematic performance, performance art, interactive art, or experimental gaming are encouraged. Candidates must be eligible for appointment as Professor with tenure and must possess a terminal degree or foreign degree equivalent.

The Department Head provides leadership and long-term strategic planning while directing the academic, operational, and fiscal activities of the department. She or he fosters creative and deliberative processes among the departmental faculty in order to advance a comprehensive and representative vision of this interdisciplinary department. Applicants should have significant, successful administrative experience of interdisciplinary arts programs and have a proven track record of mentoring junior faculty.
