SYMPOSIUM SPATIAL COMPOSITION 2

Date: Friday 7 September 2012
Start: 13:30 h.
Location: Geertekerk, Geertekerkhof 23, 3511 XC Utrecht
Entry: free (registration compulsory)

Gaudeamus Muziekweek, together with The Game of Life and Muziek Centrum Nederland, is staging a second symposium on „Spatial Composition“. The first symposium on this theme was held during Gaudeamus Muziekweek 2011. At that time the focus was on two speaker systems, i.e. the Wave Field Synthesis system and Paul Oomen’s new 4D sound project. The possibilities, limitations, and challenges of spatial composing were examined in a lively debate that spawned a follow-up. We cordially invite you take part in this fascinating convocation.

Wouter Snoei will present a try-out of his version of the WFS system in Luigi Nono’s La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura for violin and live electronics in collaboration with violinist Barbara Lüneburg. There will be discussions on the technical aspects of the systems but also on ways to use space, on positioning and movement of musicians, sound, etcetera.

Erwin Roebroeks will deliver a brief address on the history of spatial composing. Subsequently, Raviv Ganchrow will speak on how sound behaves in space.

Machiel Spaan (M3H Architects, head of the Architecture Department of the Academie van Bouwkunst Amsterdam) will be chairing the symposium and shines a light on the subject from an architectural angle.

1.30 PM:
Luigi Nono – La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura
WFS system with Barbara Lüneburg on violin

2.15 PM:
Lectures by Erwin Roebroeks and Raviv Ganchrow
Followed by discussion

4 PM: Final discussion then get-together until 4.30 PM.

Admission to this event is free, however registration through info@muziekweek.nl is compulsory.

The same day at 5 PM there is a concert in the Geertekerk with o.a. Luigi Nono’s La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura, version for violin and WFS system (try out). Admission: €12,50/€10,-.

In 1989, Luigi Nono composed La lontananza nostalgica utopica futura, an epic work for solo violin, magnetic tape, and eight loudspeakers. In 2012, composer Wouter Snoei and top violinist Barbara Lüneburg take this composition one step further in a live interpretation using the Wave Field Synthesis system on 192 speakers. This amazing system enhances the spatial aspects of Nono’s composition. The original sounds, recorded by Nono in the studio, have the same freedom of movement in the room as the violinist. Perhaps as Nono intended whereas the means to realize this did not yet exist.
