DEGEM News – FWD – „forest and sound“ on ARD sounds | Festival BLAUES RAUSCHEN 2026

Dear readers,

The “forest and sound” project (“Wald und Klang”) has been running alongside BLAUES RAUSCHEN since 2021. Under the motto “the forest for the trees”, ten artists have explored and interpreted the sounds of the forest:

Variations on the secret life of trees, the magic of forests – from ammunition depots in the Palatinate in the 1980s to arboreal birds in Central Australia.

The audio pieces range around five minutes and offer a wide spectrum of sounds and compositions from fieldrecordings  to radiophonic pieces.

From now on it can be heard on „ARD Sounds“ (former „ARD Audiothek“)!

The artists:

Anne Lepère (Brüssel) – alveolus

Journey and foray into erosion time.

Denise Ritter (Dortmund) – area one

Todays effects of the Cold War in the Palatinate Forest, the largest contiguous forest area in Germany.

Swanasa (Budapest) – forest.human.analog.digital.-system flow

Forest – the sound of this presence is organic, pulsating life.

Marieke van de Ven (Utrecht) – the forest

Being absorbed in something bigger and older than yourself, you can follow a path and feel lost at the same time.

Karl-Heinz Blomann (Essen/Berlin) – tree line goms

Sounds from the top of the forest of the southern alps.

Nicolas Collins (New York) – flicker

Javier Garavaglia (London/Köln) – befremdliche landschaften

Mixing of various forest-noises and autopoetic synthetic, automatically generated sounds.

Frank Niehusmann (Velbert) – sawing and cracking

A forest full of saws, pigs, streets nearby – a collection.

Jon Rose (Australia) – the bird who thought he was a cat

This short radiophonic piece reveals some of the mimicry abilities of the Western Bowerbird found in central Australia.

Ward Weis (Antwerpen) – 10% – a work in progress by planktone (aka ward weis)

Inspired by a planted forest “ het muizenbos “ in Ranst, a small village close to Antwerp.
