Raphaël Gillioz: Implementation of a Secondary Free-Field Calibration for Microphones in Non-Anechoic Environments
Some measurement microphones cannot be calibrated with the usual secondary techniques, and free-field calibration, conventionally bound to an anechoic chamber, remains their only route to traceability. This talk presents the implementation and metrological qualification of a secondary free-field calibration in an ordinary production room, using time-gated logarithmic sweeps with regularised deconvolution, benchmarked against reference measurements in an anechoic chamber. The talk examines what actually limits such a calibration once the anechoic chamber is removed: the acoustic environment, the gating window, or the sound source itself. The results include a complete uncertainty budget, a comparison of the two environments, a sine-fitting technique for the low-frequency end, and an effect of the loudspeaker that the published literature on non-anechoic calibration does not report.
