Ihre Akademie der Künste
Ausstellung

Time to Listen. Transnationale Zusammenarbeit und Netzwerke
Konferenz Musik Konzert
D., mit Petra Pau, Bundestagsvizepräsidentin a.

In October, we will be continuing the ‘Office of the Public Realm’ – which we established in June at Schloss Bellevue as a platform for open discussion on democratic public life and social coexistence – with a new series of talks. To kick things off, Monika Grütters, Petra Pau and Edgar Selge will discuss participation in democratic processes.
We will be honouring Elias and Yousef Anastas, the winners of the 2026 Berlin Art Prize in the architecture category, marking the 100th anniversary of the Literature Section, and celebrating the 300th anniversary of Daniel Chodowiecki’s birth.

Exhibition
Exhibition view of “Metaxy : Between Destruction and Reconstruction.” Hall 2, in the foreground: Julita Wójcik, Falowiec, 2005/06
Through fascinating international examples, the exhibition demonstrates that rebuilding destroyed places involves more than simply reconstructing buildings. Social relations, ways of life, and historical connections must also be taken into account. The exhibition begins with a study of the Hansaviertel district and the Akademie building itself, which was built after the Second World War on the ruins of grand nineteenth-century residential buildings on what was then known as Brückenallee. Reconstructed walls tracing the former residential buildings at full scale form the exhibition architecture and reconfigure the halls.
Guided tours of the exhibition ‘Metaxy : Between Destruction and Reconstruction’
A comprehensive programme of guided tours will help you explore the themes of the exhibition. During the regular weekly tours and curator-led tours, you will learn more about the concept behind the exhibition and the works of the international artists and spatial practitioners. We also offer guided tours in German Sign Language and for people with visual impairments (1 and 10 October). Lecture performance walks invite you to embark on a search for historical clues through the Hansaviertel district (4 and 18 October). And a bus tour will take you to three of Berlin’s rubble mounds (10 October).
The Library of the Akademie der Künste is presenting selected books from the estate of the private collections of Frank Beyer, Manfred Krug, Konrad Wolf and Jurek Becker, and will offer a glimpse into the library’s storage facilities.
Time to Listen. Transnational Collaboration and Networks
Conference Music Concert
The Music Section of the Akademie der Künste and field notes / inm are continuing the ‘Time to Listen’ conference series, which explores transnational collaboration and networks in contemporary music. This edition focuses on independent ensembles and their central role in contemporary music production.
How does an ensemble come together? The composer Manos Tsangaris explores this question in the musical theatre piece which the El Perro Andaluz ensemble will perform to mark the conclusion of the ‘Time to Listen’ conference. The audience moves through the performance space in small groups, experiencing individual perspectives.
In this new series of events, the invited guests select the other panellists themselves – the only requirement is that they hold a distinctly different view on the evening’s topic. To kick things off, Monika Grütters, former Minister of State for Culture and the Media, will discuss participation in democratic processes with Petra Pau, former Vice-President of the Bundestag, and Akademie member, actor and author Edgar Selge.

Archive Presentation Reading
Bertolt Brecht’s groundbreaking experiments on stage – all the performances and rehearsals – were documented in the Berliner Ensemble’s ‘logbooks’. These sources, held at Archives of the Akademie der Künste, have recently been preserved and form the basis for the staged reading featuring Constanze Becker and Gabriel Schneider, members of today’s Berliner Ensemble.

Metaxy : Between Destruction and Reconstruction Soils
Talk Lecture Performance
This event, held as part of the exhibition ‘Metaxy : Between’, explores soils as the foundation of reconstruction. Through the works of Syrbanism on Syria, Hala Alnaji on the Gaza Strip and Ola Hassanain on Sudan, it becomes clear that reconstruction must address the conflicts surrounding land, property and memory.
Meeting of the Poetry Section (later the Literature Section), 1929: Alfred Döblin, Thomas Mann, Ricarda Huch, Bernhard Kellermann, Hermann Stehr, Alfred Mombert, Eduard Stucken (left to right)
The Poetry Section was founded at the Akademie der Künste 100 years ago. Five members of today’s Literature Section – Friedrich Dieckmann, Kerstin Hensel, Michael Krüger, Katja Lange-Müller and Gustav Seibt – will read texts by former members from the period between 1926 and 1933 and discuss the key figures of that era.
Daniel Chodowiecki was one of the most successful graphic artists of the 18th century – and, as a member and, from 1797, director of the Akademie der Künste, he had close ties to the institution. The Akademie’s Archives hold significant parts of his estate. To mark the 300th anniversary of Daniel Chodowiecki’s birth, a selection of outstanding new acquisitions is being presented.

Dance artist Nach, the new Valeska Gert Guest Professor, will offer insights into her artistic practice and her research on movement, protest, memory, and choreographic writing at the start of the semester.
For 20 years, the photographer Harf Zimmermann has been photographing firewalls – the photographs from his long-term project BRAND WAND reveal how war and the post-war period have left their mark on the urban landscape and how these traces are, at the same time, gradually disappearing as a result of architectural changes. In the rotating exhibition in the foyer of the Akademie der Künste on Pariser Platz, we are showcasing five large-format works by this Akademie member.
