[E] The Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC) is now accepting

submissions for an upcoming issue of eContact! exploring and presenting

various practices that forge a link between sonic performance and light.

We are pleased to announce*Nicolas Bernier as Guest Editor* for

eContact! 19.3.

Light and the shadow that accompanies it have long been sources of

fascination, whether for painters, architects or philosophers, or for

children fleeing monsters. In recent years, this fascination with light

has grown amongst sound artists (composers, performers,

multidisciplinary artists, etc.). Motivated by the increasing

accessibility of new technologies, these artists integrate luminosity

within their artistic practices with surprising ease.

From the Ocular Harpsichord imagined by Louis Bertrand Castel in 1725

to Scriabin’s symphonic work for orchestra and clavier à lumières

(„Prometheus: The Poem of Fire“) to Iannis Xenakis‘ Polytopes through to

contemporary audio-luminous experiments undertaken by Kurt Hentschlager,

Matthijs Munnik, Nonotak, Robin Fox or Chris Salter… these are the

types of relationships between Sound+Light that this issue of eContact!

aims to „bring to light.“

eContact! is a freely available online journal for electroacoustic

practices published four times a year by the Canadian Electroacoustic

Community (CEC).

Composer and multidisciplinary artist Nicolas Bernier was awarded the

prestigious Golden Nica in Digital Musics & Sound Art at the 2013 Prix

Ars Electronica for his work „frequencies (a)“.

Musics & Sound Art» au Prix Ars Electronica 2013 (Autriche).

NEWS – Don Buchla 1937 – 2016 Obituary by Barry Truax

Von: Barry Truax

Datum: Sat, 17 Sep 2016

Betreff: [cec-c] Re: Don Buchla 1937 – 2016

Although Don and his creative ingenuity in the world of synthesizer

design has long been acknowledged and admired, as in the header of this

post, may I add a personal tribute to this sad news.

The Buchla 100 was the first synth I ever used compositionally, back in

1969-71, at the Univ. of British Columbia (we still have one in the SFU

studio), and one could say that it hooked me on electronic music.

Although I went on afterwards to the Institute of Sonology with its

sophisticated, custom designed voltage-control studios, and its much

more modest efforts in computer music synthesis and composition, it was

the programmability and improvisatory flexibility of voltage control

that really inspired me. And of course, Mort Subotnick took Don’s

compositional vision to a whole new level – arguably one of the best

designer/composer collaborations in our history.

I will leave it to others to expound on the brilliance and originality

of Don’s long succession of instruments, but let me also remind you all

what a great performer Don was, as well. I will never forget his

performance on multiple instruments of his own design in Bourges, where

he elegantly moved from one setup to another, always perfectly in

control of them, never a hesitation or a false start – a true virtuoso,

creating a professional standard that many other ‚live electronic

musicians‘ can only aspire to.

As he moved into the MIDI world, my other fond memory is of his piece

for percussion and ‚thief‘ (played in this case by himself). It was a

deceptively simple theatrical ploy where the audience is lulled into a

conventional expectation that the performer is actually playing the

percussion instruments on stage – even when the thief removes them one

at a time, and the percussionist continues to ‚air play‘ them in the

very position of their absence. Even when the audience knows the ruse,

or catches on to it, the result was a masterful commentary on virtuality

which, for once, was given a brilliant theatrical presence.

As others have said, this is the end of an era for a great instrument

designer. I trust that there are those who will preserve the amazing

legacy he has created.

NEWS – Evaluating urban sound environment in web-based virtual reality

Von: Kevin Austin via cec conference

Datum: Thu, 15 Sep 2016

Betreff: [cec-c] Fwd: Evaluating urban sound environment in web-based

virtual reality

Based on the EU funded SONORUS (Urban Sound Planner) project, a

web-based virtual reality tool for evaluation of urban sound

environment was developed, Researchers from Second University of

Naples are now inviting people to try it and give them feedback.

The test will take around 15 minutes. You will need a pair of

headphones or earphones for this test, and it would be better to do

the test in a relatively quiet place. If you are interested, you can

click the links below to start the test. There are two versions available:

Higher-quality version (recommended):

www.previewlabs.com/soundnaples/webbuild/SoundNaples.html

Tips:

– You should open the link and do the test on a computer rather than

a smart phone or a tablet.

– This version is currently not supported by Chrome, other popular

browsers (e.g. Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera) should work.

– If you don’t usually play web games, you may be asked to install a

small plug-in called Unity Web Player (size: 12 MB) upon clicking the

link. You can always remove the plug-in afterwards in the way you

uninstall normal applications (e.g., in Control Panel for Windows).

– Depending on the speed of your internet connection, it may take a

few seconds or a few minutes to load the page (usually less than 1

minute).

– Depending on the size of your screen, you may need to scroll up and

down the web page a bit to see all the displayed information. _So if

you feel you miss something during the test, for example, not

receiving instruction of next task, make sure you scroll up or down to

reach the top or bottom of the page._

Easier-access version:

Betreff: Sounds Unlimited XXXII – Geräusche der Zukunft – Auralisierung
in der Umweltakustik – Do 15.9. 20 Uhr

NEWS – 24/9 in DEN HAAG – New Emergences #4 – How numbers speak for themselves

Von: anne wellmer

Datum: Tue, 13 Sep 2016

Betreff: [DEGEM News] 24/9 in DEN HAAG – New Emergences #4 – How

numbers speak for themselves

New Emergences is a lecture and discussion series highlighting the

current debates around gender in electronic music.

The original title is: Aesthetics, Politics, Philosophy and New

Emergences in Current Electronic Music and Surroundings.

Earlier this year we began the series as a student initiative at the

Institute of Sonology in March 2016. Throughout the three events that we

have had so far, there has been a lot of goodwill for us and all the

keynote speakers and panellists have provided their presence and

conversations for free.

We have been very busy this summer preparing for this next event, and we

would also like to invite you to take a look at our new website: New

Emergences. Here we launch it to the public. It is an ongoing project

and its ethos will be a hub that connects the projects of (primarily

female but to include all other undervoiced) composers, improvisers,

performers, researchers, film and sound artists working within the field

of electronic music and beyond. The website is conceived to be a

continuously emerging web of information that will serve as a platform

to engage with new and existing voices.

On the website, we have a central blog which details the past three

events and their summaries – soon to be fully completed. Please take a

look at:

newemergences.wordpress.com/

We are very happy to announce that we have been able to place our 4th

lecture and discussion event into the Bright Collisions Symposium of

Todays Art Festival on Saturday, September 24th. The event will remain

free to the public, and will take place from 11:00-13.00.
