Thomas Seelig Fixed Media Preis 2023!
Seit 2018 vergibt die DEGEM den von Folkmar Hein gestifteten Thomas-Seelig-Fixed-Media-Preis in Höhe von 2000 € verbunden mit einem Kompositionsauftrag für „fixed media“. Mit dem Preis sollen herausragende Leistungen im Bereich der akusmatischen Musik gewürdigt und gefördert werden.
Den Thomas-Seelig-Fixed-Media-Preis 2023 vergibt die Jury an die britische Komponistin Natasha Barrett, deren Œuvre zu einem hohen Anteil dem Genre „fixed media music“ (Akusmatik) zuzurechnen ist. Ihre Realisationen zeichnen sich beispielhaft aus durch akustisch und dramaturgisch überzeugenden Einsatz von immersivem Raumklang (Ambisonics / 3D-Audio). Mit dem Preis beauftragt die DEGEM Natasha Barrett mit der Komposition eines neuen, immersiven fixed-media Werkes.

Das Schaffen der britischen Komponistin Natasha Barrett umfasst eine große Bandbreite der zeitgenössischen Musik, dazu zählen konzertante Werke, Raumklanginstallationen und interaktive audiovisuelle Arbeiten. Sie nutzt für ihre Klangforschung neue Technologien (hier besonders 3D-Verfahren) und genießt internationales Renommee für ihre elektroakustische und akusmatische Musik.
Ihr Werk wird weltweit aufgeführt, sie hat schon über 20 internationale Auszeichnungen erhalten, darunter den Nordic Council Music Prize. Sie arbeitet mit Persönlichkeiten aus den Bereichen Performance, visuelle Kunst, Architektur und Wissenschaft zusammen, und sie erhält zahlreiche Kompositionsaufträge aus aller Welt.
Jüngste Highlights:
Audiovisuelle 3D-Filme mit der OpenEndedGroup (USA), eine Auftragsarbeit des IRCAM (Frankreich), des EMPAC (USA) und des Ultima Festival (Norwegen), Klangarchitektur-Installationen, Applikationen zur künstlerisch-wissenschaftlichen Sonifikation und Live-Elektronik für die Zusammenarbeit mit zahlreichen Solisten und Ensembles.
Seit einigen Jahren hat sie eine Professur für Komposition an der norwegischen Musikakademie inne und arbeitet im Rahmen eines Forschungsauftrag zum Einfluss von 3D-Technologien auf Soundscapes im Freien und auf die Wahrnehmung ortsspezifischer Klanginstallationen. Sie ist Performerin, arbeitet in Forschung und Lehre, und sie ist Mitbegründerin der norwegischen Gruppe für Elektroakustische Musik „Electric Audio Unit“.

Since 2018, DEGEM has been awarding the Thomas-Seelig-Fixed-Media-Preis, donated by Folkmar Hein, in the amount of €2000 combined with a composition commission for „fixed media“. The prize is intended to honor and promote outstanding achievements in the field of acousmaticmusic.
The Thomas Seelig Fixed Media Prize 2023 is awarded by the jury to the British composer Natasha Barrett, whose oeuvre belongs to a large extent to the genre of „fixed media music“ (acousmatics). Her realisations are exemplary for their acoustically and dramaturgically convincing use of immersive spatial sound (ambisonics / 3D audio). With this award, DEGEM commissions Natasha Barrett to compose a new immersive „fixed media work“.

Natasha Barrett (UK/NO) is a composer exploring new technologies and experimental approaches to sound in a broad range of contemporary music, including concert works, public space sound-art installations and audio-visual live electronics. She is internationally renowned for her electroacoustic and acousmatic music as well as for the use of 3D sound technology in her compositions. Her work is commissioned and performed throughout the world and has received over 20 international awards including the Nordic Council Music Prize. She also collaborates with performers, visual artists, architects and scientists. Recent highlights include 3D audio-visual movies with the USA-based OpenEndedGroup commissioned by IRCAM (FR), EMPAC (USA) and the Ultima Festival (NO), sound-architectural installations, science-art applications of sonification, and live electronics collaborations with many soloists and ensembles. In recent years she has held a professorship in composition at the Norwegian Academy for Music and was awarded a three-year research grant investigating the impact of 3D sound technologies in our understanding of outdoor soundscapes and site-specific sound installations. She is also active in performance, education and research, and is joint director of the Norwegian electroacoustic music performance group Electric Audio Unit.
