NEWS – [cec-c] tools for notation of EA / digital media (David Hirst)

Von: David Hirst

Datum: Sun, 28 Aug 2016

Betreff: Re: [cec-c] tools for notation of EA / digital media

I have used a number of tools and notations for the analyses I have done

of ea music. Many are documented on the OREMA Project website.

As a part of my PhD I did a detailed analysis of Smalley’s Wind Chimes.

A summary can be found here:

www.orema.dmu.ac.uk/analyses/david-hirsts-analysis-smalleys-wind-chimes

This analysis used a scheme I developed called the SIAM Framework. SIAM

stands for Segregation Integration Assimilation and Meaning, it is

summarised in the following PDF:

www.orema.dmu.ac.uk/sites/default/files/Hirst_Wind_Chimes_Anal.pdf

In this analysis I developed a display that showed a spectrogram of two

minute sections of the work, underneath this I included symbols, text

and timing information relating to sound objects. The whole thing was

drawn and programmed using Flash – to be able to play the sound file,

see the sound objects, and see where they were placed in relation to the

time scale, with a cursor that followed the play back. For copyright

reasons, I can’t put the whole animation online, but there are screen

shots for the whole piece in the following PDF. You could import them

and a purchased copy of Wind Chimes into Pierre Couprie’s Eanalyse program:

www.orema.dmu.ac.uk/sites/default/files/Hirst_Screenshots.pdf

Also included in that PDF are screen shots of a tabulated „reduction“ of

all the initial information summarised into half the time frame.

(Another form of representation) = „Time span Reduction“.

I used Pierre Couprie’s program and Sonic Visualiser to carry out an

analysis of Jonty Harrison’s Unsound Objects in the first edition of the

eOREMA Journal. There are a number of different representations in that

article, for the pictures and text see:

www.orema.dmu.ac.uk/eorema/connecting-objects-jonty-harrison’s-unsound-objects

This analysis provoked a further interest in the representation of

„activity“ in ea music and how this kind of temporal analysis could be

automated and represented. The following paper summarises work to

explore the „Rhythmogram“ representation of sonic events, and work to

represent and automate activity and segmentation creation:

tenor2015.tenor-conference.org/papers/28-Hirst-PerceptualModels.pdf

Related papers on this work can be found in the following:

Music, with Application to Normandeau’s Onomatopoeias Cycle. Proceedings

acma.asn.au/media/2014/01/ACMC-2014r1.pdf

The Rhythmogram can be used to depict both long term structures (the

whole piece), or short term, detailed structures say 10 seconds. The

pictures have been said to have some resemblance to the hierarchical

diagrams of tonal music by Lerdahl and Jackendoff.

MATLAB and the MIRtoolbox, plus the Auditory Toolbox were used for the

Rhythmograms and automated sound segregation.

A lot more detail can be found in my book:

Music:

online store.

I have some other stuff too, but that is enough for now. 👴🏼

Basel – SOUNDS UNLIMITED XXXI – Gesture-based Performance System – Mi 31.8. 20 Uhr

Betreff: SOUNDS UNLIMITED XXXI – Gesture-based Performance

SOUNDS UNLIMITED XXXI – Gesture-based Performance System – Mi 31.8. 20 Uhr

unten). Die nächste, einunddreissigste Veranstaltung findet am Mittwoch

31. August um 20 Uhr statt:

Gesture-based Performance System – Gestische Kontrolle in der

elektronischen Aufführungspraxis

Cedric Spindler & Frederic Robinson

ABOUT INTER-:

INTER- is a new event series presenting experimental sound work for

speakers.

“between” “among” “in the midst of” “mutually” “reciprocally” “together”

“during”

These nights are about creating a focused, public listening context for

deep experiments in / with sound. We aim to support work and practices

which might not fit easily into other performance contexts. We hope

these events can help to draw together practices across electroacoustic

composition, studio production and field-recording (amongst others) and

be part of the exchange between sound and music methods taking place

across Glasgow, and much further afield…

bit.ly/2bnNkgO

We can facilitate stereo, quad and 5.1 playback and are very open to

other ways and means.

Proposals of all kinds are welcome – across aesthetic, conceptual and

technical boundaries.

We are particularly interested in presenting work and practices which –

– use recording, editing, producing and listening to explore

contemporary spaces – real, virtual, liminal

– explore new approaches to environmental recording

– develop reflexive relationships between recordist/listener

We are excited to see what develops through these events.

Perhaps a broad range of

– utopian/dystopian soundscapes

– fragments

– phone clips

– youtube rips

– club/dance diffusions

– field-recordings

– sonic self-narratives

sonADA 2016 is sonADA’s third experimental music and sonic arts festival

that showcases sound artists, performance artists, and experimental

filmmakers whose work is centred on new and explorative approaches to

sound. This year’s theme is Reverse-Play-Forward, which challenges both

artists and audiences to think about how our time—the now—has been

contextualised by the heritage of our past and the dreams and desires

towards our future. We are inviting some twenty artists (six Featured

Artists, eight artists from sonADA Selections, and eight sonADA Artists)

in North East Scotland, the UK, and abroad to respond to this theme

through their three-night performances.

We hope to see many of you at sonADA 2016!

Samstag, 27. August 2016 | 23:30 Uhr

aus New York präsentiert.

diNMachine „…makes amoebic dance-rock that references the twitchy funk

of the no-wave movement, the transcendent glitchy textures from every

era and strain of electronic music and the compositional qualities of

classical music, with flourishes pulled from music – and sounds – from

across the globe.“

Betreff: SOLID STATE and other news

Dear all,

This has been a heavy pedagogical semester as a guest professor at

Folkwang Essen and starting to teach in Hamburg and becoming the new

artistic head of the electronic studio at Lübeck. Thank you everybody

for the wonderful time, input, trust and conversations!

I am also about to finish my doctoral degree this year as well, and the

phd concert will take place at Kampnagel in Hamburg on the 31st of

August, as part of the SMC 2016. Join Decoder Ensemble and me for a

portrait concert with five of my current pieces.

I would like to share the video trailer for my recent installation with you:

SOLID STATE is an audio-visual installation, that deals with the

experience of rave culture and transcendence. The room is transformed

through light, fog and surround sound into a state of ecstasy and

hallucination. It uses synchronicity and shifting of visual and auditive

patterns – by that reshaping the perceived geometry of the room in

different ways.

The visitor is confronted with a situation in which he can’t see further

than one meter and can’t precisely estimate the features of the space he

enters, thus experiencing emotions of disorientation and letting go. The

intense visual strobe stimuli create strong patterns on the retina which

are continuously shifting.

Expect something between a cognitive experiment and post-rave!

Here’s all info on the piece:

After a very long time I made two mixes which I uploaded to soundcloud.

Check them out if you like.

On December 9th my new one-our concert installation „Black Mirror“ will

be premiered by Lucilin as part of the Rainy Days Festival in Luxemburg.

There’s only a very limited stock of tickets.

Several upcoming concerts coming up, which can be found here.

Thank you for your interest,

and all the best,

Alexander
