Datum: 28. August 2012 16:21:40 MESZ
Electrolibrary by Waldek Węgrzyn – Paper book as interface
Created by Waldek Węgrzyn at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, Poland, “Electrolibrary” is a project that connects a custom made paper book to the computer, so it can be used as an an interface. The book can be browsed as any other regular book but when connected to the computer via USB, by turning pages, you can navigate through the website, getting additional information, quotations, movies and animations appropriate to the currently open page.
The content of the book is Waldek’s diploma thesis discussing phenomenon of a book as an inteface. The text contains number of references to different works, but the major inspiration is the manifesto “The topography of typography” published in 1923 by a graphic designer El Lissitzky which has also influenced the design of the book.
Waldek used teensy development board hidden in the cover and a set of circuits made of conductive paint printed with silk-screen method. This allowed him to detect which page is currently open, and also to add touch-sensitive elements to the illustrations. The book emulates a keyboard and communicates with javascript code on the website – no additional software required.

Listen Carefully – Re-enabling focus in music listening
Created by Jonas Breme, Listen Carefully is about raising awareness about music experience and a critique of digital music consumption aiming to spark debate about how we buy and experience music today. Avoiding passive experience, custom designed pair of headphones allow users to focus by disabling the playback if the user moves thus encouraging focus and time off from other activities.
The times we are living in are fast moving and hectic. Modern technology is altering the way we live, work and consume, supporting a fast and superficial lifestyle. A way to cope with these new challenges is hard to find. Nowadays it seems more and more important to critically reflect on one’s behavior in order to define a viewpoint and find a healthy way to live.
The consumption of music has changed in the recent years, mainly influenced by technological development of media and playback devices. In many situations, music listening has shifted from a main-activity to a side-activity (H. Weber has coined the term passive listening). Music is no longer in the center of our attention, but is heard while focusing on other things. Subsequently, due to the change in perception, music is in danger of degenerating into an unnoticed background noise.
By using a built in accelerometer, digital potentiometer and an Arduino Mini, the headphone lowers the playback volume on juddering movements, “forcing” the user to sit still and relax.
Listen Carefully is one of three design concepts, developed as part of Jonas’ BA thesis about music-listening behavior at the Interface Design program at University of Applied Sciences, Potsdam. The objects and concepts are not to be seen as marked-ready products, but rather as critical design objects aiming to spark debate about today’s forms of consumption.

Betreff: CALL FOR WORKS „Cinema in the dark“ program to be screened in India in Feb. 2013
Datum: 28. August 2012 01:00:44 MESZ
CALL FOR WORKS
„Cinema in the dark“ program to be screened in India in Feb. 2013
Deadline: September 2, 2012
http://www.au.dience.org/submit/submit/
BACKGROUND
Conceived in 2006, ((audience)) is dedicated to the advancement of aural arts by providing wide distribution and new contexts for works by emerging and established sound artists and composers. The centerpiece of ((audience)) is an unprecedented project that explores the cinema as a 21st century concert hall: a selection of 5.1 surround sound art works by international artists presented in movie theaters as „cinema in the dark.“
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
((audience)) seeks 5.1 surround sound art works or stereo works that directly represent the unique soundscapes — urban, rural and media-based — of the Indian subcontinent. We are particularly interested in audio compositions that emphasize spatial experimentation and/or treat cinema as a unique format for storytelling and the organization of time.
Submitted works should relate to one of two themes: „Soundscapes“ and/or „Bollywood in the Dark.“ „Soundscapes“ is open to international and Indian artists. Works in this category may have any subject or organizing conceit but must use field recordings from the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, etc.) as their source material. Shorts (5-15 minutes) or feature-length (20-90 minutes) works may be submitted.
„Bollywood in the Dark“ is open to international artists, though preference will be given to Indian artists. Works in this category may be narrative sound films; playful reflections on Bollywood tropes and clichés; critical experiments with Bollywood musical context; or new musical compositions built from samples of popular film. Shorts (5-15 minutes) or Feature-length (30-70 minutes) works may be submitted. Only one feature will be selected.
Selected 5.1 surround sound art works will be presented in a completely dark cinema environment without visual accompaniment as part of the Khoj International Artists‘ Association’s 25th Anniversary celebration. Selected stereo works will be presented in a related side program over the radio at a date to be announced.
Artist fees will be determined in September 2012.
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Once we receive your submission form, we will send you an invitation via email to access our secure Dropbox submission folder. Once you receive that information, log-in and submit all materials in an archived folder (.zip, .rar, or .tar.gz) labeled with your full name. Depending on the type of submission, you should submit your audio as a stereo file, or as a wav or playable surround sound DVD disc image. For more information, contact us at curators [at] au.dience [dot] org.
ACCEPTABLE SUBMISSION FORMATS
(1) A playable DVD (disc image) with the surround sound mix
(2) Multiple mono .wav files (four files for quad OR six files for 5.1)
(3) A stereo .wav or .mp3 file
We recommend 24bit/48khz bit depth/rate for .wav files.

Betreff: Point Ones Newsletter
Datum: 6. August 2012 13:52:07 MESZ
Two weeks ago my new piece „Point Ones“ for augmented conductor small ensemble was performed by Nadar Ensemble in Darmstadt. I want to share a video recording of the performance with you:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CN-rIIuyNbY
In „Point Ones“ the conductor is equipped with motion sensors and through this is able to conduct both the ensemble and the live-electronics. Most of the piece is not realized with traditional conducting but with cue gestures, that mark beginning of new passages – hence the title „Point Ones“. The aim is to be able to experience the live-electronics in an embodied way and to create a fully controllable instrument for the conductor. Because of that the piece does not use a click track or other timeline-based fixed approaches. Above those technical considerations the piece tries to play with the vocabulary of the conductor and the anticipations and traditions connected to those gestures. It is not always predictable what the result of the conductors movement will be.
The piece is part of a sequence of sensor-based works like e.g. „Your Fox’s, A Dirty Gold“ and „Laplace Tiger“, in which different interaction concepts with augmented instruments and performance codes are dealt with.
Also, I would like to draw your attention to our new ensemble Decoder.
Hamburg’s newest venture of sound, the Decoder Ensemble, performs music from a wide spectrum of contemporary styles, their means spanning from experimental instrumental techniques to groundbreaking electronics. Focusing on young composers from varied cultural and artistic backgrounds, Decoder is pumping a new energy into the contemporary music scene.

Datum: 23. August 2012 23:11:26 MESZ
Here’s a collaboration between Concordia Laptop Orchestra (CLOrk) and Concordia dance students (April 4th 2012).
The sounds were all prepared by the members of the orchestra, using a variety of tools, including CLOrk’s proprietary „Juicer“ instrument (the juiced up noise 3/4 of the way).
Group beat-making was done normally with one sound per person, synced up with CLOrk’s OSC/MIDI sync over wifi.
Dancers were invited to improvise and use the orchestra space freely. To eliminate the separation between audience and performers, audience members were also invited to walk around freely within the performance area.

Registration is now open for Field Studies, 10–13 September 2012 http://field-studies.org.
Please share this information.
Tutors: Brandon LaBelle, Lee Patterson, Davide Tidoni.
Keynote talks from Christina Kubisch and Joseph Kohlmaier
Contributions from John Dack (Middlesex) and Helen Frosi (SoundFjord, London)
Field Studies is a four-day summer-school led by three acclaimed sound artists and composers. It explores the possibilities of engaging with places through listening, and working with recorded sound as a creative and practical tool in architecture as well as composition and art practice.
Field Studies is open to everyone with an interest in sound and the environment. The course syllabus is aimed more specifically at architects and urbanists, composers, and artists, but open to students from a broad variety of backgrounds and professions. It is suitable both for those who are new to working with recorded sound as a medium, as well as those who already have an established practice in this field.
Field Studies is taught in the form of parallel masterclasses led by different tutors, each exploring the topic of sound and listening from different perspectives. Cross-masterclass talks by tutors and visiting speakers and a series of practical workshops on recording techniques complement a programme of sonic-capture field trips, discussions, performances and creative work following a set, but fairly open brief.

DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC
FACULTY OF FINE ARTS, CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY
Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Electroacoustic Studies
Concordia University’s Department of Music invites applications for one tenure-track position in Electroacoustic Studies for July 1, 2013.
• The department is known for its focus on creative practices in contemporary and classical music, jazz and electroacoustic studies. We also offer music performance (instrumental and vocal) and theory and composition as areas of concentrated study, all built around a core curriculum of general music instruction. Situated in Concordia’s vibrant Faculty of Fine Arts, faculty and students enjoy numerous cross-disciplinary opportunities, state-of-the-art resources and facilities, and a rich artistic and cultural context for research and study. Interfaces between music and other Fine Arts departments include links and collaborations with dance, theatre, animation, film, creative arts therapies, music therapy, and others. Music faculty members are well known internationally for their active contributions to research/creation, conference organization, composition, pedagogy and performance.
The BFA Major in Electroacoustic Studies, one of the few of its kind in North America, attracts increasing numbers of strong candidates. A recent move into new facilities in downtown Montreal has meant several new, dedicated studios; easier access to other facilities within the Faculty; and has placed the program at the core of Montreal’s dynamic cultural life where electroacoustic work flourishes. A well-organized curriculum provides students with a balance of technological guidance, creative work, critical listening, and awareness of both history and current theoretical research. Recent developments include increased live performance, a laptop orchestra, networked telematics concerts, and collaborations especially with animation and contemporary dance.
•• The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of Electroacoustic courses, with a particular emphasis on ear training. Specifically, the successful candidate will be expected to teach and coordinate core ear training, as well as live, mixed, interactive, and computer-assisted performance In an increasingly connected and collaborative world, the successful candidate will be expected to contribute to other areas within and beyond the music department; therefore, besides top-flight electroacoustic skills, a certain amount of background in one or more other realms of music, or other fine arts, is desired. Besides teaching, additional expectations are: to develop a national and international research profile in the candidate’s area of expertise; to undertake administrative service; and to help strengthen links with cognate units in the university and city, such as matralab, Hexagram and other entities.
••• Preferred candidates should demonstrate expertise in the area of electroacoustic ear training and practice; have an active research/creation profile in the domain of live, interactive, and/or mixed performance; an excellent knowledge of current trends in relevant software and hardware developments; and evidence of artistic endeavours in the field. We are looking for an excellent teacher with very broad interests encompassing creative, conceptual, technological, historical and future-oriented issues.
•••• Applicants should possess a completed PhD; teaching experience at the post-secondary level; a demonstrated ability to conduct and disseminate innovative research; and a record of administrative and committee service. Although classes are taught in English, fluency in French would be considered a strong asset, with additional languages welcome.
••••• Submissions should include a covering letter, a curriculum vitae, research documentation, a statement of teaching philosophy and interests, evidence of teaching effectiveness (including course evaluations where applicable), documentation of past and current performance works, and the names and contact information of three referees, one of which must be the candidate’s department chair or dean or someone in a direct supervisory role.
Applications should be submitted or postmarked on or before November 1, 2012 to:
