Bei Saramago rebellieren die Dinge gegen eine hierarchische Gesellschaft, in der menschliche Beziehungen längst einem bürokratischem Regelwerk gewichen sind, in der die Menschen sich wie Objekte behandeln und sich nach ihrer Nützlichkeit bewerten. Diese Umkehr der Verhältnisse bildet den Hintergrund für unsere szenische Performance, in der Klänge die Hauptrolle übernehmen.

The Harmonic Series – Device that explores musical and visual harmony

Created by Manuela Donoso and Luisa Pereira, The Harmonic Series is a collection of mechanical devices , software, sculptures and prints that explore the relationship between musical and visual harmony.

Inspired by the nineteenth century mathematician Jules Lissajous who invented a device to visualize sound vibrations using two tuning forks and a beam of light reflected from one mirror to the next to a screen, Manuela and Luisa have re-created and extended this experiment using recent tools. An electronic version of the device replaces the tuning forks with microphones and speakers, allowing people to sing different musical intervals, and contrast the resulting figures with the more chaotic ones generated by percussive sounds.

An application plays groups of three notes and plots 3d Lissajous figures for their frequency ratios. The frequency ratios for major, minor and diminished chords are 4:5:6, 10:12:15 and 20:24:29 respectively. These chords were plotted using the app, and then printed as posters and sculptures that reveal a tight relationship between aural and visual harmony.

The Harmonic Series is an ongoing project: a web application and a portable version of the mechanical device are currently under development. Created using Processing.org (libraries: opengl, controlP5) and the project includes a speakers, an amplifier, microphones and a laser pointer.

Overview:
The inaugural FETA Prize in Sound Art 2013 aims to promote a broad range of contemporary American sound and installation arts. Artists working within the sonic arts such as sound installation, sound sculpture, sound poetry, soundscape, robotics, net art and similar may submit one work each for consideration. The prize is open to any individual of any age who is a permanent resident or citizen of any North, Central and South American country. All submissions must be anonymous. The prize will include $1,000 USD and a feature in the online art magazine Gwarlingo.

Beim Festival „Acht Brücken. Musik für Köln“ wird am 9. Mai für die Uraufführung „Opportunity“ des Schweizer Komponisten Reto Stadelmann (gemeinsam mit dem Choreografen Stephen Wynne) der Klangdom in Köln errichtet. Unter einer Kuppel aus Lautsprechern kann das Publikum im Theater am Tanzbrunnen selbst Teil eines außergewöhnlichen Musik- und Tanzspektakels werden.

Einen Monat vor der Premiere wird Reto Stadelmann im Klangdom des ZKM | Institut für Musik und Akustik seiner Komposition den letzten Schliff geben. Im Gespräch mit Ludger Brümmer und anhand einiger Klangbeispiele bekommt das Publikum des ima | lab No. 14 dabei einen Einblick in die Arbeit des Komponisten.

Reto Stadelmann

Der Komponist, Dirigent und Produzent kulturpädagogischer Programme wurde 1977 in Luzern geboren und studierte Komposition in London, Manchester, Köln und York. In seinen Kompositionen verbindet Reto Stadelmann volksmusikalische Stilelemente seiner Schweizer Heimat mit zeitgenössischer, klassischer Musik auf internationalem Niveau. Er vermischt Tradition und Moderne und schafft daraus ein authentisches Spannungsfeld, ein Mit- und Gegeneinander von unterschiedlichen Stimmen, Zeiten und Kulturen. So kreiert der Künstler eine eigene Tonsprache, die unterschiedliche Seiten seiner Person widerspiegelt. Reto Stadelmanns origineller Umgang mit musikalischen Mitteln drückt sich in der Vielzahl seiner Kompositionen aus und wird im breiten Spektrum seiner unterschiedlichsten musikalischen Projekte reflektiert.

meine Residenz in Morelia (Mexiko) neigt sich dem Ende zu und bevor aus dem gefühlten halben Bein im Schnee zwei reale ganze werden möchte ich noch auf einige erfreuliche Dinge aufmerksam machen, die sich in naher Zukunft ereignen werden.

Am 17.04. um 23:05 gibt es auf WDR3 eine Sendung von Michael Rebhahn über meine Compound-Reihe.

Am 04.05. spielt das Kölner Ensemble Handwerk mein Compound No.4: FRICTION MACHINE ALARM SIGNAL CONSTRUCTION beim Hamburger Festival Blurred Edges im Westwerk. Beginn des Konzerts ist um 20:00.

Vier Tage später, am 08.05. gibt es ein Konzert von Handwerk beim Festival Acht Brücken in Köln, im Bootshaus „Alte Liebe“ um 22:30, wieder mit Compound No.4.

Ebenfalls in Köln bei Acht Brücken findet das nächste stock11-Großereignis statt: Am 11.05. präsentieren wir Stücke von Seidl, Ogiermann, Palmtag, Schottke, Marcoll, Walshe, Rasch, Schüttler und Maierhof.
Bei dieser Gelegenheit werde ich mein Compound No.5: CONSTRUCTION ADJUSTMENT für Black Box und Elektronik spielen.
Stattfinden wird das Konzert im kleinen Sendesaal im Funkhaus am Wallrafplatz um 20:00 Uhr.

Pünktlich zu diesem Konzert wird die neue stock11-CD erscheinen, auf der unter anderem mein Compound No.4: FRICTION MACHINE ALARM SIGNAL CONSTRUCTION in einer überaus erfreulichen Einspielung von stock11 mit Gästen (Unbi Hwang, Ashot Sarkissjan und Eva Zöllner) zu hören sein wird.

Ebenfalls in den nächsten Wochen wird eine neue CD von Norbert Krämer und Michael Pattmann erscheinen, auf der unter anderem mein Compound No.2a: AIR PRESSURE TRAIN TV (die Duo-Fassung des Schlagzeugsextetts) enthalten sein wird.

We are pleased to announce the Fourth International Symposium on Music and Sonic Art: Practices and Theories (MuSA 2013), an interdisciplinary event to be held in Karlsruhe, Germany at the Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Musikinformatik (IMWI) (http://imwi.hfm.eu). The dates of the Symposium are 24-26 May, 2013.

We are delighted to announce that the keynote speaker has been confirmed as Philippe Manoury.

Proposals for sessions and individual papers for the Fourth International Symposium on Music and Sonic Art: Practices and Theories are invited from academics, independent researchers, practitioners and post-graduate students. Presentation formats include academic research papers (20 minutes + 10 minutes for discussion); reports on practice-based/artistic research or educational programmes (20 minutes + 10 minutes for discussion); and workshops and panel sessions (45 minutes + 15 minutes for discussion). The Symposium committee encourages presentations in which practice forms an integral part. All proposals will be ‘blind’ peer-reviewed. The Symposium language will be English.

THEME AND TOPICS:
The principal aim of MuSA 2013 is to advance interdisciplinary investigations in – as well as between – music and sonic art. Even if widely divergent on the surface, there are various overlaps between the concepts and techniques that underlie ‘traditional’ subject areas such as historical/critical musicology, performance studies, analysis, aesthetics, ethnomusicology and sonic art theories and practices. Interdisciplinary explorations within and across these domains benefit all those who engage creatively and/or as scholars with the phenomena of sound and music.

Proposals dealing with any subject area that is within the broad remit of the Symposium will be welcomed. Hence, the Symposium topics include – but are not limited to – the following, in relation to musical and sonic art practices and theories:

• Technology in relation to performance and/or composition

· Performance aesthetics

· Practice as research: methodology and technique

· Critical discourses on creativity, embodiment, expression

· Cultural and social processes

· Inter-artistic explorations: collaborations and tensions

· Phenomenological, psychological, cultural and historical analyses of creation/production and reception

In der Reihe „Produced at IMA“ werden in loser Folge versehen mit einer thematischen Klammer elektroakustische Werke aus den Archiven des Institut für Musik und Akustik vorgestellt. Als künstlerische Forschungsstätte die aktiv Produktionen begleitet und fördert verfügt das Institut für Musik und Akustik über einen extrem vielfältigen Fundus an Werken die hier in den Studios von internationalen Künstlern der elektronischen Musik realisiert wurden. Oft handelt es sich um Werke, die speziell für den einzigartigen Klangdom im ZKM_Kubus komponiert wurden oder in speziellen Klangdom-Versionen existieren. Mit „Produced at IMA“ will das Institut für Musik und Akustik seine lange Zusammenarbeit mit Künstlern für das Publikum sicht- und vor allem hörbar machen. Die fertigen Kompositionen werden in programmatischen Zusammenstellungen von einem Klangregisseur vorgeführt. Thema der aktuellen Ausgabe mit dem Titel „imagining nature“ ist „Natur in der elektronischen Musik“ – es werden verschiedenste kompositorische Ansätze präsentiert: von der Integration von Feldgeräuschen in elektroakustische Kompositionen bis hin zu imaginierten Landschaften als Formprinzip einer Komposition.

Celer ist das 2005 gegründete Solo-Ambient-Projekt des in Tokio lebenden, aus den USA stammenden Musikers Will Long. Neben seiner Arbeit als Fotograf, Musiker und Autor betreibt er das Label Two Acrons. Mittlerweile sind von Celer über 80 Veröffentlichungen in Nordamerika, Europa und Asien erschienen. Will Long arbeitete u.a. zusammen mit Miko (unter dem Namen Oh, Yoko), Hakobune, Mathieu Ruhlmann, Nicholas Szczepanik, Yui Onodera, Corey Fuller und Tomoyoshi Date.

Christoph Heemann, geb. 1964 in Aachen, begann seine musikalische Arbeit 1983 als Gründungsmitglied der Gruppe Hirsche Nicht Aufs Sofa (H.N.A.S.), die zwischen 1985 und 1993 diverse Alben ihrer surrealen Collagenmusik veröffentlichten, und sich dabei von unterschiedlichen Einflüssen aus Musique Concrète, Avantgarde, Krautrock und improvisierter Musik inspirieren ließ. Nachdem sich H.N.A.S. aufgelöst hatten, setzte Heemann sein musikalisches Schaffen sowohl solo als auch zusammen mit Edward Ka-spel von den Legendary Pink Dots und Jim O’Rourke in der der Gruppe Mimir fort und arbeitete mit Andrew Chalk in dem Drone-Projekt Mirror und mit Timo van Luyk als In Camera. Heemanns Solokompositionen wurden oft als „Filme für das Ohr“ beschrieben, in denen er Field Recordings, akustische Instrumente, Elektronik und elektroakustische Sounds in Audioerzählungen zusammenführt. Neben musikalischen Kollaborationen mit Jim O’Rourke, Lee Ranaldo, Charlemagne Palestine, William Basinski und Produktionen für Keiji Haino, Charlemagne Palestine, Limpe Fuchs und Current 93 betreibt er seit 1994 das Label Streamline. Für Aufsehen sorgte 2010 Heemanns Vertonung der Erzählung „Die Ringe des Saturn“ von W.G. Sebald.

Hollywood Dream Trip ist ein neues Projekt von Will Long und Christoph Heemann, dessen erste LP 2013 auf Streamline erscheinen wird.

The third annual seminar on cognitively based music informatics research (CogMIR) will take place as a satellite meeting of SMPC 2013 on August 7, 2013 at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. In addition to invited keynote presentations by David Temperley (Eastman School of Music, University of Rochester) and Marcus Pearce (Queen Mary, University of London), we are pleased to invite the submission of abstracts for spoken or poster presentations.

Important Dates:
Deadline for abstract submission: April 30, 2013
Notification of acceptance: by May 15, 2013
Deadline for early registration: June 1, 2013
One-day Seminar: August 7, 2013, 9 am – 5 pm

Abstracts submissions concerning research on the following topics are especially welcome:
-Cognitively based approaches to music information retrieval
-Cognitively based approaches to music analysis
-Cognitively based approaches to music generation
-Computational modeling of music similarity
-Computational modeling of music emotion
-Music cognition with implications for music informatics

Abstracts should be no longer than 200 words. Please describe the motivation, methodology, results and conclusions of research within the abstract. Do not send abstracts as an attachment. Please type the abstract directly into the body of your email with a complete list of authors and their affiliations. Please indicate preference for poster or paper presentation.
